I used a Ukrainian vpn, went into steam and bought the game using MY country card, everything went smoothly + my steam store has now changed to Ukraine region
My question is this the right way to do it? Like I won’t get banned or something?
Cuz I just casually used vpn and bought the game, I didn’t expect how smoothly it went cuz I saw people buying steam accounts from other regions and using gift cards instead, I thought there could be more to it and I’m doing it in a way that could get me banned? Am I good or nah?

huh that’s weird. You are supposed to use a Ukraine-issued card or steam gift cards. You either got lucky or something has changed since the last time I bought through regional stores. Someone with more up to date information please let us know.

From now on avoid refunded games or mass gifting games. And always buy from website not desktop or mobile app.
It used to work for me either for a first purchase. Next time I tried to buy a game or top up a steam wallet, I got an error. Last time I tried with a Turkey Ininal card and it went smoothly. Curious if it is going to work next time. I’m using Urban VPN also.
Not sure how it works in Ukraine specifically, but I believe it’s pretty common for Eastern Europe non EU countries to just get lucky with using cards in other regions. A lot of countries don’t have a local market in global world-wide stores. I am from Belarus and we don’t have local prices anywhere, usually we have common European costs but in USD. And cards work with any USD/EUR region at least. And sometimes some bank cards work just in random regions, like we could buy games in Turkish PSN without even a VPN with cards issued by a local bank until October 2023, when russians mass reported it to Sony. I guess, with Ukrainian cards and in Ukraine region sometimes it is possible too, but you really have to have good luck.

But even if I got lucky with the card, why do people buy region steam accounts if they could just use vpn and buy the game?

i got a paid vpn service ($12 per month) and their servers keep getting blacklisted by most websites. The fact you got it to work with a free one is kinda crazy. I wouldnt worry about getting banned, it’d be more likely they’ll just revert your account store to your actual country.
I’ve been buying through the turkish region on steam for many years now and i dont even bother turning the vpn on. I just redeem a gift card from g2a and buy whatever. Never worried about being banned. Although now the turkish region is nowhere near as cheap as it used to be so i don’t buy many games anymore. I just pirate instead.
I got lucky as well. Switched my account to ukrain exactly like you described. Be cautious tho, My account stopped accepting my foreign credit card after my second purchase. And now I’m using steam US gift card to up my steam wallet.
