Hi all, just wondering if anyone has ever successfully activated Koodo’s Wi-Fi Calling from outside of Canada.
I’m currently travelling in Europe and I’ve tried connecting to a Canadian VPN, but it still doesn’t work.
Would really appreciate any help or experience!
I have been able to do this over wifi and data from an esim (iphone). This thread may help: https://www.reddit.com/r/telus/comments/16vck7q/enable_wifi_calling_internationally_ios/
Short answer is try turning off location services, if you cannot turn it off entirely, go into system location settings and turn off location for everything related to the network, time zone, wifi calling etc.
With that said, they have been known to blacklist your device from Wifi calling if they detected you are outside Canada. The only way to be removed from the blacklist is your device connecting to a cell tower in Canada.
Bell and Telus blocking WiFi calling just to make more $$$ for roaming. CRTC should require this service to be provided to reduce roaming charges.
From what I’ve heard, wifi calling doesn’t work for any of the big 3 and sub brands, including Koodo. Only freedom has true wifi calling outside Canada.
I recently tried to test wifi calling on koodo. I am still in canada, but was just testing it out.
I am using a pixel 6.
- Enabled wifi calling on phone
- Turned off location settings
- Put phone in airplane mode
- Turned wifi back on.
My phone is working fine on wifi calling. I am not sure if koodo can still determine my location(i tried all this in canada).
Theoretically, all this should work from outside canada as well.
Any thoughts ?
Thank you! Did you connect to VPN on your iPhone or your router by the way?
the blacklist i’m not sure truely exists. they’ll block requests for access to wifi calling for about 3 hours. then you can try again
Thank you. However I can confirm that Rogers actually supports that as well but Telus/Bell doesn’t. I’m still trying to see if VPN can bypass it.
I was with Koodo for 10 years, moved to Freedom because of all the blocking that koodo does. My Voice over wifi works perfectly in the US, as well as sending texts. I LOVE Freedom, plus I can call them instead of those annoying callbackz.
Rogers works on wifi calling overseas.
Did you try from outside Canada? Can you report the results? Thanks
VPN isn’t the whole battle. You also need to turn off Location, and when you’re on wifi, enable airplane mode, that way they can’t have a logic issue like current network == not telus + location == canada cause of you’re not on telus when you enable wifi calling they’ll block it. so when you leave wifi disable wifi calling, then when you’re back on wifi with your canadian vpn and location off, enable airplane mode then enable wifi calling
Hmm I did not know Rogers wifi calling worked outside of Canada. Both calls and texts work? Good to know. Are you aware if that includes Fido wifi calling?
yes it’s working for me right now
Gotcha. Thanks for the tips!
Both Rogers and Fido WiFi Calling works from outside Canada.
Yes both calls and texts worked for me. My Rogers bill also showed that calls were from Europe but charges were 0 dollars. Not sure about Fido but I think it will work too.
Hi, I’m glad you had success with this! Currently trying to get it to work on an iPhone with Bell. Followed all the instructions and even using Obfuscated Canadian server on NordVPN. Any tips to help? Thanks!
no problem. it’s flawless when it works. tedious to setup though. also careful with non-canada numbers. not sure ur koodo plan but they’ll charge you like C$1.50/min to call where you are because if you get wifi calling you’ve convinced them you’re in canada
