VPN Geolocation

Hi All,

So got my Tailscale all setup and using my NAS as a exit node. Going travelling soon, when channeling through my exit node will it give a UK IP address?

It should, however there could be some ip leakage. To prevent that you should somehow setup a killswitch or other way to prevent system from using internet while VPN is off or not healthy. Idk how to set it up on tailscale, check in options

Yes, though it can depend on what you’re doing. Your ip address will appear to be your NAS’s ip address, so if whoever you’re trying to fool only uses that, you’re fine. If you’re using a device that has another way to determine location (like GPS in a phone) and you’re using an app that checks that (like YouTubeTV) it won’t work. For instance, I’m in the US. I recently traveled to another country. I had my phone exit through a node in the US and none of the streaming apps were fooled. If I shut off the location services on my phone they wouldn’t work until I turned them back on. However, my Kindle Fire tablet worked fine, as it doesn’t have any location services. My Windows laptop also worked fine.

Hmm that’s interesting. I’ve also setup OpenVPN to test too

Streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+ and others? Pretty sure they use your phone’s base connection (no vpns allowed) which is why geolocation doesn’t work.

Kind of like how you would enable vpn on your phone and enable personal hotspot. The person connecting to your personal hotspot would not tunnel through the vpn, rather through your mobile data.

Good point, that could be. Of course none of those services are very open about that. I did disable the data connection, so it was only going through Wi-Fi. That would still trigger the wrong location though. I suppose I could monitor that Wi-Fi network though and see what my phone is doing over that connection.
