Anyone using one with decent results?
Are you trying to lower your ping? If so, a VPN won’t help. You could try a tunneling service, but even then, don’t expect a huge difference.
Just for context, my experience is based off three different VPN providers (PIA, Express VPN and a no name home brew provider) and all increased my ping. This was from Brisbane, so going out of the same Sydney to Singapore route you’d be following to France. That said, you may find one that reduces your ping, it just hasn’t been the case in my experience
G’day from the Gold Coast QLD! I’ve found that wtfast helps, but it’s effect is very minor. I sometimes forget to put it on and don’t notice a difference. That being said I am a tight ass and I’m only using the free trial version. I’ve heard better results/reviews from those who do pay. Sitting around 350ms most of the time when the servers are stable. About 330ms with wtfast.
From Sydney, WTFast shaves about 15 off my ping. Worth it? I dunno
I use pingzapper which gets me to 350ms down from 400+ms but I am in Darwin though
I doubted tunneling would do anything but, for what it was worth, I decided to run tests with Battleping. Using their best France tunnel server, connection Type 1 increased ping and while Type 2 did not increase ping, it was no different to the regular traffic ping.
This is purely cosmetic though, your ping if anything is probably actually higher than without a VPN on. With a VPN on your public ip address will look like the location wherever you set it, that’s what the server sees, so that’s what it pings you back on and measures your ping time as for the latency shown. In actuality its that ping time plus the ping time it takes for your connection to route through the VPN gateway.
