I have been a YouTube Premium subscriber for years, ever since they had exclusive series like Weird City.
I’m from Brazil and I was living there when I first subscribed for Premium. Recently, I moved to Australia and kept my subscription on my Brazilian card. Now YouTube just cancelled the auto-renewal from my subscription and it’s now requiring me to pay in AUD.
For some time, I was thinking about cancelling my subscription, and now Google just did it for me. I feel that content on YouTube got worse in the last few years, especially after they introduced short videos. More and more, I was spending time scrolling to find something nice to watch, instead of watching content that I really enjoyed.
I’m a software engineer and I learned a lot on YouTube. This is one of the main reasons I started paying for Premium, because they had some great programming tutorials, but the price of Premium is just absurd nowadays, especially compared to other streaming services.
So, I think that’s my prompt to spend less time watching YouTube. I know that a lot of people were doing the VPN trick to pay less for Premium, using countries that they never lived in, but hey, at least they were paying something instead of using adblockers!
IMHO, this was a greedy attitude from Google, but I guess that’s what that company became. “Don’t be evil”, they used to say…
blockitall is way cheaper and no ads on YT at all - even on my TV. i don’t need premium.
I’m in Australia too, the cost is ridiculous for all our streaming services. But our free to air channels have such crappy content, I’ve kind of resigned myself to paying for something.
same here, seconded!
I was wasting time, but especially rest of the family. It was a nice “rip the bandaid off” situation.
Yeah I recently received that E-mail from Youtube and had my Premium cancelled.
Although, if you come from a country like Brazil why don’t you just have a friend or relative go onto your youtube account and re-activate it?
I recently asked my cousin from Pakistan and it was reactivated on my Pakistan card. (Previously I was paying through Ukraine).
Without Premium Youtube has become unbearable. I’m surprised they do these many ads now e.g. 3 ads in one go lol.
One user said he used a revolut card, argentinian card in this case, and it worked. I haven’t tried it yet
It still works if you go via Algerian VPN. Use Surfshark or express VPN or something, delete YouTube app and log in via Brave browser with the VPN connected.
Just pay via Revolut and put in a random Algerian address, £4.82 a month, not that bad.
this is ridiculous, thought Google only cancel subscriptions not paid by a local card
Make wise card, use vpn and buy in algeria. Way cheaper.
Live TV in Australia is comically bad, but at least we have Stan. YouTube wants over $40 monthly for Premium, while a service like Stan costs $17 and IMHO has much better content.
I thought about doing that, but I was for some time considering cancelling YouTube just because I feel I was spending too much time in it, and the content is not relevant to me as it used to be. So if Google wanted to cancel my subscription, let it be… Won’t be giving them my money anymore
Just a fyi, on browser Adblock plus still works for blocking YouTube ads unless you are part of the pilot group.
Also if you’re watching from android phone you can use Video lite or Play Tube to block youtube ads
Thanks for the advice, but I don’t plan on paying for YouTube ever again. There are only a handful of channels I actually watch, and for those I’m just downloading the videos using yt-dlp.
This is being good for me to reduce my YouTube usage, a good part of the content on the platform nowadays is pure garbage anyway.
Fair play. As long as you see your usage of YouTube going down that’s totally understandable.
I agree with you. I’m using it only for youtube music.
They don’t have it for iOS?
it’s compatible with every system: iOS, Android, PC, Mac - you can even install it in your router (if it is compatible with OpenVPN) to have your whole network youtube ad-free (INCLUDING TVs!!). this is the way I use it, so no ads on any device with only one subscription.
Weird I looked it up on iPhone (blockitall) and it won’t come up
well, it‘s not an app…google it. you will find it.
