For some reason, on my home Win10 PC, some sites just don’t work right unless I turn on my Norton VPN. But only from my computer. No other devices (my laptops, wife or son’s PCs, tablets) have this issue. If I go to YouTube, the page loads, and I can start a video, but then it freezes after a few seconds. I can go to Gmail, and the page loads. But it’s extremely slow, and if I close an email and try to delete, it just hangs. Trying to leave the page gives me the warning that progress will be lost (or something similar). Random other sites are either very slow, or won’t load. Or won’t login if I try. But once I activate my VPN, everything works fine. This happens with all browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge). Not using an internet proxy. I’ve tried default automatic DNS servers, and manually changing to Google’s or Cloudflare’s. Been driving me nuts for a while now. Any ideas?
any uodate on this? im having this problem currently
I don’t see any mention of you attempting to remove the VPN to see if that helps.
I have certainly run into problems with McAfee and/or Norton’s VPN services. It’s almost like the traffic still tries to route through the VPN, even though it is off.
If I am remembering correctly, I ran into this very recently. I was forced to fully remove the Norton suite, as there was no option to remove JUST the VPN.
Reinstalling the software, VPN included, allowed it to function properly again when toggling the VPN off.
Forgot to add that. Tried removing the Norton suite, and it didn’t help (with a restart after). Flushed DNS cache. Reset winsock. Rebooted router (even though only my PC is affected).
Hm, that’s an interesting one then for sure… you seem to have taken the necessary steps to ensure that everything ‘should’ work normally when the VPN is off.
The only other thing that I can think to try, would be to Update the drivers, I assume this is using Ethernet. If there’s any chance you know someone with a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, you could switch to this and see if the same issues are noticed, or try a Wireless connection if you have that option.
Two other things you could test would be:
Does the issue still present itself in Safe Mode?
Using the command [tracert]. I am not a network expert, but I use to use this command a lot back when I was in college to try and diagnose bad Routes. I don’t expect that this would provide much information that would be beneficial.
There are much better programs (Like WireShark) that can allow you to Analyze your network traffic, but I have not used such programs, Networking is one of those areas I try to avoid when I can.
Drivers are updated. Using onboard ethernet, not via USB adapter. Safe mode does the same. I have no latency, fast bandwidth. Tracert isn’t helpful for this. This one has really stumped me.
Have you tried Incognito mode in the browser as well?
Same thing. Also with private window in firefox.
When looking at the Ethernet Adapter through Windows Settings, is Metered Connection toggled on?
