Hello
I would like to have some information about NordVPN before taking out a subscription.
I’m currently testing several VPNs to try and find the one that best suits my needs.
Here is what I am looking for:
- WireGuard protocol support (it seems that OpenVPN supports it)
- port forwarding support for p2p use, with at best a port number that doesn’t change, or changes at most once a week, if not less often.
- support for split tunneling on Windows, so that only some of my applications pass through the VPN
- support for a kill switch function to cut off communications from applications passing through the VPN if the VPN communication goes down, to prevent data leaks
- I also want my applications to be able to communicate with each other via ipv4 when the VPN link is activated. Many of them have their own web interfaces accessible via 127.0.0.1:portnumber, so my applications that don’t use vpn need to be able to communicate with those that do.
- a disappointing price
Does the NordVPN for Windows app offer all these features on Windows 10 ?
Thanks
Yes, as “NordLynx” built into the app. For manual setups such as on a router, it’s possible but not supported.
Ok so it’s compatible
No. For some people that’s a deal breaker, so the rest may be irrelevant. It’s still possible to seed, for example I recently downloaded the Linux Mint 22 iso and my ratio currently sits at 2.17.
Your answer is not clear, is it possible:
- to open a random port on all possible vpn servers for its user account either via the account’s web interface or via the VPN application?
- How long does an upnp port configured for a user at NordVPN last?
It’s a feature in the app, but search the sub for previous posts. It seems to work OK for some people but not others. A more reliable method may be to set up a VM or Docker containers.
Is this function officially supported on Windows by the official NordVPN application?
Yes. For apps that allow it, the recommended method is to bind the app to the VPN interface instead of relying on the kill switch.
Ok noted.
I haven’t heard of anyone having issues reaching a local/loopback address. The app also has an option to disable “Invisibility on LAN” to reach other LAN computers, and Meshnet is an option to reach computers from outside the LAN.
Ok nice!
Check “cashback” type sites, some users have reported over 100% discounts. There’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can just try it and see if it meets your needs.
Ok will check that.
Warning though. Once you install Nordlynx you apparently will not be able to remove it without reinstalling your whole OS.
I’m having this issue right now. Was with Nord for years. Decided to try another company. Whenever the new VPN tries to install it’s TAP, it shows up in Device Manager as “Nordlynx Tunnel” and causes the new VPN to not believe it’s TAP is installed.
Luckily, the new VPN (PIA) allows you to switch protocol to Wireguard, which installs it’s TAP just fine.
