I have recently purchased a Surfshark subscription and I am using the browser extensions on both Firefox and Edge.
However when I am using Edge (not Firefox) when I startup the browser I get a prompt saying that the proxy requires a username and password… if after I get that prompt I refresh the page or open one of my pinned links Edge opens it normally and the VPN keeps itself connected without any issues (so despite it “requiring” authentication if I ignore it I still am autheticated).
I have already tried to give it my username and password (I have also used the manual configuration data given on Surfshark’s website) and it logs in correctly (if I instead type the wrong things I get disconnected from the VPN) but despite doing that the prompt keeps appearing at every browser startup…
Is there a way to solve this problem which only happens with Edge? Cookies are stored and kept every time I close the browser if this can help.
If you receive an inquiry asking for your Username and Password, this is most likely a false prompt. This prompt usually only happens on Chromium-based browsers. In essence, the connection is working, but it is not recognized by all browser tabs properly. This issue should appear less often from Chromium version 122.0.6257.0 and onwards. So you can try looking up the version of your Edge browser and update it. Alternatively, you can also enter the credentials from here as you’ve done before - https://my.surfshark.com/vpn/manual-setup/main/openvpn which should close this prompt indefinitely or at least for a while.
Yeah I had this issue on Microsoft edge so I switched browsers to Firefox and u haven’t had the issue since. It seems to be an issue with Microsoft edge
I have seen that a new version of the extension (4.21.1) has been released, I do not know what it addressed but the bug I have reported is still present. I am saying this just in case 4.21.1 had this bug as its primary target.
Just gonna note: I experience this *and it only occurs on startup. The fact that so many people report it as resolving on refresh may just be that by the time they have refreshed, the connection is fully established. It may just need to wait for a specific step in the browser’s initiation.
Is there a resolution yet? I just became a customer and have the same problem on the first launch of Edge, every time. I have to click cancel on the prompt. MacOS 15.3 and Edge 132.0.2957.140
I have already noticed that if I click cancel / refresh the page / open another tab that popup goes away however it is pretty annoying and I would like to know if there is a way to make this “bug” go away.
In that case, could you try reinstalling the extension? If the popup requests to input credentials input them from the link I provided and let me know if the issue still keeps happening even after the reinstall.
I’ll make sure to let our team know about this issue you encountered. I understand the popup can be quite annoying and we’ll look into it. You can also reach out to our support team at any time for any issues as well at [email protected] or via live chat.
