Proton VPN app (with paid account) disconnects all the time

Hi

I have a paid subscription of Proton VPN and it works really well when using the Proton VPN app on the computer. It’s stable and fast.

The problem starts when I try to use the VPN service on my Mi Tv Box (2nd gen) which as you know, runs on Android TV 11.

It connects well, then I switch to TV Bro, visit the website that I need, start watching and then all of a sudden the video stops. At this point I go back to the Proton VPN and realize it’s disconnected.

I’ve tried many times and it always happens.

I researched a bit and found a recommendation to disable Energy Optimization for the ProtonVPN app, which I did.

Then I tried again but the Proton VPN app still disconnects from the VPN server after a few minutes.

Have you experienced this? How did you solve it?

damn… I have an old mibox3 but use ipvanish for my vpn n that never happens to me… I use brave browser to watch stuff tho. I know it’s not remote friendly n I end up using a keyboard/track pad combo but it works.

You don’t need to use the ProtonVPN app at all in this case!

Easy fix for you and WAY less demanding on resources would just be to use WireGuard or it’s many WireGuard clients on F-Droid

You generate your wireguard credentials and choose your endpoint at account.protonvpn.com

Enjoy

Thanks that’s a great idea.

What version of Android TV do you have on that device?

Hey
From your experience, this provides a stable connection without interruptions?

And btw, how would I select which server to connect to? (This is something that the ProtonVPN app allows)

Thank you.

Btw, which Wireguard client do you recommend?

This one seems to be the official one and it says it’s compatible with TV:

damn… it’s disconnected atm but I wanna say 9. using a Shied Pro right now running 11… but I’m gonna check right now to make sure since you brought it up…

edit: k so it is still running 9 n I checked for an update n no go…

Yes, it’s built precisely with that in mind, a way to maintain connection even when cellphone service goes in and out. You can most definitely find several WireGuard clients for Android.

You select the server at account.protonvpn.com in the WireGuard area - you cannot even generate the credentials without choosing your specific server

So you don’t have this problem with your vpn app, and run it on both of your devices. Got it.

Thanks. I’ll keep looking into this.

In the meantime I’ve disabled Energy Optimization for TV Bro, Network Manager and VpnDialogs (thse two are built-in system apps), cleared the Proton VPN app cache, restarted the device and I’ve been watching for a while and it hasn’t disconnected :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t see anything regarding WireGuard, but I do see “OpenVPN / IKEv2 username” at https://account.protonvpn.com/account#openvpn

Is this what you meant ?

yeah I’ve heard protons vpn isn’t as caught up w/the rest of the major players out there… Nord, Surfshark, Express etc… I just chose what I did cuz someone gave me a voucher n I ended up staying w/em going on 4+ yrs now… every yr before my time is up I chat w/support to get the price back down to match my original price… makes a huge difference. sure I might be able to find a better VPN but for now it’s kept me happy.

edit: I missed the part where you said it’s working now… that’s good. hopefully it continues to but if you do continue to have problems later on down the line I suggest you look into asking support for help n possibly getting a refund if that’s an option. fingers crossed it keeps working tho…

No, not at all

I see what’s going on… their mobile mode is dumbed down and has no options

Open it on your desktop web browser for full functionality

Thanks for replying.
I don’t know who downvoted you or why they would do that.

I was able to watch uninterrupted but after a while, unfortunately it stopped again. Then I reconnected and watched a little bit more but then it stopped again. Sometimes the disconnects coincide with moments where I paused the video for a while and was not using the MI Box at all. But it’s not like it went to sleep or anything.

I’ve contacted Proton VPN support.
This definitely can’t go on like this, it makes no sense.

Hey
The screenshot was in fact taken on the computer.

yeah they downvoted you as well… I noticed it since I gave you an upvote n then it went back down again. iunno why ppl are like that. kinda used to it by now… try a diff browser n site for the time being to see if the problem persists. if so then def contact Proton soon as you get a chance n let them know your issues while explaining to em that if they can’t offer you what you paid for that you’d like a refund… other services offer trials or money back guarantees so you can always give them a try n see if it helps… hope you get it sorted out n keep in touch if you need any help

It’s under Downloads

Thank you for replying :folded_hands:
I haven’t managed to get some free time to deal with this.

In the meantime Proton’s support suggested finding ways to deal with the low memory of the Android TV device, they say that’s the reason ProtonVPN is getting disconnected.

hey there /u/optical_519

I installed the Wireguard official app from Play Store and added my config file from a flash drive.

It runs well, lasts longer than the ProtonVPN app. But… It still disconnects.

I know because the site where I’m watching from (full screen video) just stops and goes blank (full black screen) and then when I go back to home screen and open the Wireguard app I can see the stats are reset (they’re starting from 0 KB). I don’t have to connect manually, it’s like it never stopped but the fact that the download stat is counting from 0 KB, gives it away that something happened.

I think I’m starting to understand why people look so hard for devices with more memory. The MI Box 2nd gen has 2 GB RAM. This is my first Android TV box and I’m quite disappointed if memory (RAM) turns out to be insufficient for such a basic need (run VPN connection and watch video on the browser).

Is there a workaround?

A few days ago, after reporting that I had trouble with the ProtonVPN app, their support looked at the logs an told me to try a memory optimization application. I had a look on the Play store and nothing relevant showed up
