My Opera GX Review!

I have been using this browser as my daily driver for few weeks now, here’s my opinion:

Q: Why am you using this instead of mainstream browser?

A: for the ability to access Whatsapp Web from the side panel (I need it to be in close proximity all the time, having it as a tab isn’t as convenient) it can also have Instagram, FB Messenger, VK and telegram in there, and for GX Control ( a utility in the side panel that lets you set a limit to cpu %, ram %, and internet trafic by the browser, it’s amazing to just set it to lowest internet traffic possible to stream GeForce NOW with my full bandwidth, although I would love to see even tighted control on ram and cpu %, for example cpu usage can be lowered to 25% as maximum, and ram can be lowered to 1 Gb maximum. Also, It does some really good freezing of tabs, I ccurrently have 20 tabs running but it’s only using about 830 Mb of ram, when I click on a frozen tab, it doesn’t reload it, it takes about 4 seconds to get back running (I should mention I’m running a slowish hard drive, maybe an SSD will make that wait dissapear). I’ve used multiple browsers, Opera GX has the best tab freezing and ram usage in the game. also, laptops with TN panels have pretty abysmal viewing angles, so with dark mode enabled, it’s really hard to know which tab I’m on with Chrome or Edge, Opera GX has that nailed with the line only going on the active tab, example. Also, it has Workspaces, it’s basically having multiple windows open with each one containing multiple tabs, but in one single window with buttons on the side pannel to switch between them, you can set it up to have a work workplace and another for competitive reddit browsing amongst other non-work activities for example.

Q: I’m not intersted in the features mentioned above, does it have any features that’ll make me want to switch?

A: Depends on what you want from a browser, it has built-in adblocking (But if you want to disable it on a specific link, it’s way too much clicking to get to that on/off switch), it has built-in vpn (just a proxy, really bad as I heard, please use real VPNs). it has a tint color customizer (I just go with plain white) It has a gaming news and it shows which games are currently on sale. it also has animated backgrounds for New-tab. Non of these intrest me, but it may do to you.

Q: will it steal my data and sell it to shady ramen noodle dealers?

A: Don’t know, but probably not. Opera has been in this buisness from 1995, so they aren’t new commers by any means. Although they were involved in predatory loans in India and Nigeria amongst other places back in January this year.

Q: is it stable, polished and fast?

A: I noticed no speed difference, but the app isn’t as stable as the competition, in a severe pressure load it crashes, taking down all tabs, having to reload them sucks, but for my usage, this happend about 4 times in total. and spelling checking is broken for me (the app can’t download the english dictionary or something) so that sucks too . As far as it feels, Edge Chromium is the most polished browser imo, from the amazing UI to good text to speech to the superb pdf files handling, Edge just nails it in terms of polish.

But as long as no other browser has the features I mentioned in the first part, I’ll stay using Opera GX. What do you think?

This exact type of information has gotten me to try this for a few months
During the first days everything was fine, I experienced the clean sidebar with GX control, Whatsapp, custom color schemes and whatnot. But recently, my computer started recieving constant crashes.
Apparently after opening the Task Manager, the top of the list, there it was, a single tab, eating up over 1.2 gigs of precious Ram, even after limiting system usage.

Thanks for sharing your review u/wynix. I have a ROG Zephyrus Duo and am debating which browser to install specifically to reside on the second screen! Much appreciated

i find it to be a solid browser in general and the additional features it provides give it a +1 above the competition, i have experienced a crash once until now but other wise its pretty good.

i would like for there to be a function to allow for the user to be able to put tabs from 1 opera browser window to another window, this function exists in other browsers but not here unfortunately.

I really like the picture in picture thing on youtube that it provides, since i like to watch videos while i play games. It’s really clean and the ram thing is pretty incredible, especially for me since I have twitch open in the background a lot.

Opera Gx is not what it claims to be, It is not a Gaming Browser. But what it is, is a Browser for gamers. I think thats the most important part to take into consideration. Internet Explorer, Does not have the same appeal.

The most polished browser thing doesn’t apply here,As it is still in early access.

its Ben 5 hours since i installed opera gx and wow! in completely in love with it from the free vpn to the sound effects and thank god i can use my chrome extensions here

Just installed it today and I can say that I’m in love with it, especially the sounds. And the fact that I can use Twitter, Discord and WhatsApp while browsing, I love it even more. I used to use Brave but after installing Opera GX, I can’t go back.

My main issue with using this browser is that they do not provide proper security.

They do not update the Chromium version as often as all their competitors do.

The latest version of Opera GX is Chrome 85.0.4183.121.

But since then Chromium closed a bunch of critical bugs.

This is some of them:

https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2020/11/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_11.html

https://threatpost.com/google-chrome-87-nat-slipstreaming-flaw/161344/

This means, that if you sit on Opera GX you ACTUALLY are vulnerable and can be hacked.

I don’t know where Opera GX guys are looking and why they are not doing security updates often.

Good looking browser is cool, but if it is vulnerable to critical bugs and it not up to date all the time, people will not use it.

four years later and it’s fuckin amazing, lovin it fr.

If you’re someone like me that could care less about RAM and gaming in general, background music that feels like watching a nursery video with dancing fruits and the option to have fart keyboard sound effects may interest you.

Pretty awesome browser.

i love the pc version but the mobile one let me down cause i couldnt connect my bookmarks form my pc to mobile so yeah lol

The browser was 7/10 becous of crashes and no fps

The browser takes my fps from games and Laging browser

invated colors without me terning it on…

Opera GX is awesome. “Ohhh, i just closed out of my 20+ tabs. what will i do?” Press CTRL + Shirt + T. thank me later <3

so is it better that google?

Im just scared to switch to another browser that is promoted by a LOT of youtubers for some reason

So?..

i got it and it was fine the fist few days then all of a sudden i got hacked on ONLY the account that i login with on opera gx it might be a coincidence but i think not.

Chromium keeps reinstalling itself and putting itself on my desktop. Feels like malware/bloatware to me. Hearing that it’s from Microsoft, and looks like a literal reskin of Chrome doesn’t help either. I’m just gonna use Chrome instead of Chromium.

> Opera has been in this buisness from 1995

This is kind of misleading, since the office was bought out by some Chinese consortium like ten years ago and the Opera today is *not* the Opera from 1995.

A lot of the original Opera developers went on to other projects, including Vivaldi.

Opera Gx made me racist…
