Hi there, newbie here, would appreciate your help.
I used Mullvad VPN while staying at a relative’s house. I didn’t torrent or do anything suspicious with the VPN.
However, now that we’ve left, he reports that his IP has been blacklisted and he can’t sign into his work accounts.
Is it possible that my use of Mullvad VPN caused his personal IP to be blacklisted?
Unless your relative happens to work for his ISP, I don’t see any plausible way for his employer to even know that you used a VPN. To the contrary, whatever you did while using a VPN can be practically ruled out as a reason for your relative’s issues, in as much as they are indeed caused by his IP address.
Is it possible that you connected to a VPN on a device that was/is also used by your relative to log into his work account? If your relative tried to log into his account on a device connected to a VPN, his workplace might have blocked his account (rather than his IP address) precisely because the login attempt wasn’t coming from your relative’s usual IP address.
Were you using it on your own laptop/phone, or did you install Mullvad on his PC?
If the former, then 100% nothing you did could have caused his issue. If the latter, then it’s possible he’s still inadvertently using the VPN (whose IP addresses are sometimes blocked, as you know).
This is especially true if it was connected to a server that was not in the same geographic area. There is a concept of impossible travel, where the system will detect that you connected to two different IP addresses from places that are impossible to get to that quickly.
Only my own laptop and phone. I thought perhaps his internet service provider or someone could have marked his network for using a VPN?
