I am considering moving to Russia but worried about not being able to access good VPN. Maybe they just keep blocking VPN as soon as they find that people are using it.
VPS → Amnezia (easiest way) or your own VLESS server (need some guides, but more reliable).
Come on, dude. If our officials block smth, in a couple of weeks we find a dozen of ways to pass it. This is some kind of a game that has been going on for a thousand years here in Russia.
They have already forbidden smoking on the streets, so lets see how they try to ban internet. I suppose the result would be just as funny.
Answering the question - there are lots of different VPN services, and Im sure, you can find smth that suits you.
Обход блокировок Рунета - browser one, works 99% of the time since 2022.
Goodbyedpi - for youtube and discord, breaks every week but fixable, a little nuisance. Sometimes it fixes sites too.
Heard about Flowseal for youtube and discord, didn’t test myself.
Various VPNs that people adviced in other replies here or you can google them.
You can configure your own VPN/VPS, people on IT site Хабр often provide guides - you can google smth like настройка своего vnp хабр.
Most of russians roll their eyes when government bans something and they find and share solution in less than a day. People in government roll their eyes too when they pass another ban like discord.
Russian government currently doesn’t have power to block access to all VPNs, though they promised to spend shit ton of money for it soon, we all know that at best 10% of those money will get to real action because it’s just a massive field to steal money from.
I only use Browsec extension in my Yandex browser from time to time, when I want to read some shit news about Russia on BBC to amuse myself, and it still works, just as few years ago. Free version. They advertise something about increased Youtube speed with subscription but I don’t need it.
Wait what? Smoking in the street is banned? Lol what. How likely am I to get in trouble from a cop having a bad day? There are special bins everywhere with ashtrays in them ffs!
I heard that the Russian government made Twitter and Youtube slow. When you say you don’t need it, is Youtube still fast enough even with the slowed down speed?
That dude gave u missinformation. Smoking is banned in public places, such as cafes, public transport, on work places, chill places etc. All of that places has a special smoking areas, so when u smoking there or just on street - u completely fine
Smoking is prohibited in public places, except for specially equipped smoking areas. Public place is any place except your house. Street is a public place. So, formally it is forbidden to smoke just on the street for example on your way to the job. Needles to say, that nobody cares about this law.
But smoking in places like cafe, restaurant or cinema etc is forbidden and it’s ok, and nobody smoking there(except special places)
I can assure you it’s relatively easy to pass Twitter and Youtube bans, you will need to spend time to download stuff and learn how to use it.
Rutube and VK Video can’t replace a giant library with megatons of various content that Youtube is. There is little to no content in both of services, *especially* if you need something specific like engineering, building and stuff. IIRC Youtube removed access for Rutube to reupload their vids.
It depends.
It is so slow on my PC/TV that not even the lowest quality video can start. What I can see is video still previews. On my smartphone, when I use 4g connection and not a home WiFi, Youtube is as fast as it always had been.
I started to use Rutube and VK Video on PC/TV instead of Youtube and by now I got so accustomed to it that I can say that I don’t need YouTube anymore. I have even installed Rutube and VK Video on my smartphone.
Nope, formally smoking just on the street beyond smoking place is banned. You won’t get a problem, but formally it’s forbidden.
Thanks, yeah, that is more logical. It might have been a language issue because obviously I’m not going to light one up in the metro or indoors or something. I was mostly joking with that post but the reality is that there could be random laws that just get dropped and how would we know?
This is in no way a complaint I just find it funny and refer back to the saying “Russia bans things in a big way, and the bans get ignored in a big way”.
Anyway, so basically as long as you use your mobile hotspot instead of home WiFi, YouTube and twitter will be normal speed?
Does Rutube have same videos that are on YouTube or is it totally different with only Russian content?
Formally yes, but 99% nobody cares
Just read the news i think if you want to know about upcoming laws. Anyways if smth get banned such a discord or youtube, after some time there is A LOT of bypasses and everyone uses it. Just a day after discord got banned we play with boys in EFT, chatting in discord and watching youtube in 4k using zapret-ws and doing that today. So basically nobody cares lol
I have never ever used Twitter in my life. I think that unlike Youtube it is not “slowed down”, it is officially blocked, just like Linkedin. There is no way I can access Linkedin without VPN or some anti-deep-packet-inspection software.
Youtube is perfectly accessible on my mobile, even though provider is the same as my home internet (Rostelekom).
Mostly Russian content, like 99% of ot is Russian content. I was able to find some original videos in English though and occasional uploaded Youtube videos. For example, I don’t think that Russ from RetroGameCorps uploaded any if his videos to Rutube, someone else did that.
Yep, just as I said.
Thanks God, that the severity of Russian laws is compensated by the non-binding nature of their enforcement.
