Same here. Use Kagi for search and absolutely love it. Additionally, with premium plan, Kagi Assistant is irreplaceable to me, as it combines AI with search for competent and validated references.
I’m trying to use Qwant as much as possible.
- It’s totally private, no data is ever being collected on users
- Theres been some speculation about weather it uses bing, but as far as I know it all boiled down to - no it doesn’t use bing as such. Theres some articles written about it if you look it up.
- It’s supposedly non-profit
- It’s made in France, which means it’s not made in China.
- It’s pretty and neat, you can adjust a few things very easily
It’s still on its way up and it doesn’t have all the cool functions that google have such as connection with maps, currency, calculator, all that stuff. But maybe it will some day if we support it.
ddgr in a linux terminal.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ddgr/
It’s fast and there are no ads. Select what you want and it pops open your default browser. Searches can be customized with command line options,
Works on MacOS and Windows, too.

Usually use Duck duck go for most things. !g will take your DDG string and pop it open in google. I use that maybe 1/100 times. Yandex is also good if I think my results are being filtered. perplexity.ai I just discovered last week. Seems like a cross between search and AI. If I don’t want links and just want dissemination of something in a page or two. Super good at comparisons of things. Like mechanical devices that are similar models it seems pretty good at cutting through marketing fluff. Also, it’s great with cooking questions. I’m still figuring out what its limits are, but pretty cool so far.
I utilize DuckDuckGo for searches. When the results don’t meet my expectations, I employ one of their ‘bangs’ to switch to a different search engine
maybe duckduckgo-lite
The main problem is that most of the alternatives seem to just use Bing. So unless Perplexity or SearchGPT gets traction, I’m not sure who the true alternatives are. That is, unless you are ok substituting Google for Microsoft (arguably the original monopolist). I do personally prefer Bing results in terms of quality right now and I guess a good compromise is Google losing market share to Bing. At least more competitive balance.
justbasically any searxng instance with decent uptime. For example search.disroot.org
Startpage has been the best for me honestly
Swisscows?
Startpage is google search but with a ‘privacy’ front end , guess like DDG with bing and SP is Google
I’ve tried lots of alternatives and in my opinion startpage is clearly the best. And it’s not noticeably slower than any of the others I’ve tried, including google, so maybe the slowness you’re referring to is caused by something on your end.
Isn’t it better to use ChatGPT to search?
I use DDG and it works great for most quick searches natively but my default for web browsing is using perplexity in a containerized browser
Why don’t you just use duck duck go?
Did you check out this section already? https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/wiki/index/#wiki_search_engines or maybe this will help? https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privacy?tab=readme-ov-file#search-engines
Yay, fellow Kagi user! Definitely worth the price for good search and you’re supporting a small team making it better over time.
I started with the Starter plan, thinking would just use the 300 searches a month and then use DDG (or equivalent) for the remainder of the month until reset. So yeah, used up the 300 searches and immediately upgraded to the Professional plan, didn’t want to use anything else after that initial experience.
How can Kagi be truly private if they tie your searches to an email and account?
