How does VPN server hosting work for open source vpns?

I want to know how server hosting works for vpns that are open source and not run by a corporation or company (no official servers). Could someone pls explain it to me? Additional question: can you ‘ask’ someone to host a server in a specific country

u/1401_autocoder is 100% correct, but it seems like it’s hard for you to grasp the concept.

What you’re referring to as “open-source VPNs” is open-source programs that enable the client (i.e. your device) to properly connect to the server (yeah, that VPN server) and communicate with it, and vice versa.

You have the client program, the server has the server program. As they work on the same protocol, each side knows what to expect from the other, and they establish a secure encrypted connection through which data is going.

If you connect via such open-source programs, you have to enter the Internet address of the VPN server, so that you could establish a connection. The server may also have a system of profiles, so that only the customers (or whoever’s normally using it) could connect.

As for the server side…you either host it yourself (just take your own server or rent a virtual private server, aka VPS), or connect to someone else’s server, but that raises the question of trust. A VPN server can effectively monitor everything you do online for as long as you’re connected, as it’s an intermediary between you and the rest of the Web.

And as such, yeah, you can ask whatever person from whatever country to create a server for you, or rent a server located in whatever country by a VPS provider. It will work.

For example in this specific example i am talking about VPN Gate servers. Can a VPN server be hosted on a PC? More importantly, how do I connect to the VPS provider in the city in question

I did understand that but sadly I had to watch a YT tutorial on how to setup SoftEther and it only talked about VPN Gate, also created by uni of Fukushima. Could you please help me setup a trusty server? I was happy to find vpn gate because i can’t really pay for a vpn rn. Are there any free trustable servers?
