How Does my ISP know that I am torrenting at school with a VPN?

I live with a couple of people and one of them has recently come down on me because they’ve been getting emails from our ISP about illegal downloading which is my fault entirely for being stupid. I then started using a VPN and the emails kept coming. Now, I have opted to using my university’s wifi miles away from the house, with a VPN, making sure all my torrents are finished downloading before turning the VPN off and stepping off campus so my laptop does not connect to the home wifi and alert the ISP. Another email came today. I don’t know what I’m messing up here. Is it something with my browser? My torrent client? Any help would be appreciated.

If you’re not using qBittorrent get it.

Bind qBittorrent to your VPN. This stops all torrent traffic if your VPN drops it’s connection or you forgot to connect. It’s more reliable than a Kill Switch.

In qBittorrent, go to Settings > Advanced > Network interface and select your VPN interface.

If you don’t know which is your VPN, disconnect it and see which interface disappears.

Hey there! It looks like you might have forgotten to bind your VPN interface to your qBittorrent. To ensure your torrent traffic is securely routed through your VPN, check out this guide: Guide: How to Bind VPN Network Interface to qBittorrent

While using a kill-switch is a good step, it may not provide complete protection. Combine it with binding your VPN network interface to qBittorrent for added privacy and security. Stay safe and enjoy torrenting!

Read the notice from the ISP carefully. Does it say something along the lines of “We have received notification from a copyright holder…”

If so, then the ISP is simply forwarding a notice to you, and you don’t have the VPN configured correctly

Tell them to forward the emails to you

Are the letters for things you torrented?

Did you leave your torrent program running at home?

The notice has to say when you downloaded. Is it today or weeks ago?

> making sure all my torrents are finished downloading before turning the VPN off

This is insufficient. You also have to make sure you are not SEEDING when the VPN is off. Just never run your bittorrent client without being connected to the VPN.

PSA it’s not illegal to have your IP address on the tracker or even connect to the swarm. They have to prove you shared copyrighted files and they don’t bother to prove this.

what if they just say that i downloaded and they wanted deleted
