I have several bank accounts in the US but I live in Belgium. Unfortunately, a lot of banks ban foreign IPs and commercial VPNs so I’m thinking about setting up some piece of hardware connected to the Comcast router in my grandmother’s house in the US which I can connect via my laptop from Belgium.
Any advice on how to set this up hardware and software-wise would be much appreciated. Preferably with the cheapest possible equipment and no subscription fees.
You could try setting up a WireGuard VPN on a U.S VPS. This will give you a dedicated U.S based IP Address. Monthly price is low for an entry level VPS.
Simplest setup would be to get a GL.iNet router at the US residence and set it up to be your wireguard server. Then install wireguard on your computer and connect to the Glinet router.
Bonus tip: if you have a work laptop that doesn’t let you download wireguard, get another glinet travel router and have that router connect to the first router as a wireguard client. This way, any device you connect to the travel router will look like it’s in the US.
The people recommending raspberry PI are well intentioned but if someone doesn’t have programming experience, there’s a learning curve.
Glinet makes the process much simpler. Zero coding.
I don’t think it matters, won’t be a significant difference in performance. Personally, I have two travel routers (beryl AX). One is my WG server at home and one is my WG client that goes everywhere with me; and they’ve been working great. Fast speeds and zero downtime.
