Can employer see my network activities if I'm using my own VPN?

I work remote and I’m using company’s macbook. They monitor traffic using ESET antivirus. I know that because IT just told me the other day that there’s something wrong with my ESET, and they couldn’t see network activities.

I also use VPN with split routing for work stuff.

So my question is, if I use my own VPN (PIA) on top of split-routed work VPN (or even with work VPN turned off), will ESET still be able to monitor my traffic?

Honestly, if the device isn’t owned by you then you can’t assume anything.

Use a personal device for personal stuff, simple as that then you can’t go wrong.

ESET is installed on the machine so they can see the traffic when you connect to internet no matter what IPs you have. They’ll be able to tell if you’re using VPN or not.

You probably could kill ESET services but given that it’s your work laptop, it’s probably not a good idea anyway. Best to use your own device or personal stuff. This way when you part with the company, you don’t have to worry about your personal stuff is in there. Most IT would probably image the laptop before sending out to a new user but you probably don’t want your information floating about for IT to see.

If eset configured to report to an internal work ip address, your vpn might break that connection.

Why do you care if they can log your traffic? You’re using the work machine for work, right?

Probably. They can definitely see you’re using a VPN.

Short answer yes. And if you work for a smaller org, you probably don’t wanna piss off IT.

Only use company property for work stuff, and use your own computer for personal stuff.

Assume they can see EVERYTHING you do on that computer regardless of whether you use a vpn or not…

It’s their hardware, so they can have logging software on the device; including but not limited to key loggers, monitoring 3rd party app installs, taking screenshots/live cast of desktop or even take complete control remotely.
