Trying to learn a bit more about VPNs to satiate my curiosity (so I will preface by stating I am no expert) this had led me to research various forms of VPN (such as using dedicated providers, hosting your own on a VPS, as well as having a personal one at home). It is to my understanding that the most significant advantage to a VPN provider is bypassing country restrictions and that hosting on a VPS offers a bit more control over the VPN.
Seems that the only real distinguishable benefit to having your own is being able to establish a secure connection back to your home network to access data that might be stored internally, but couldn’t you just set up SSH to accomplish that? In terms of security I guess you would be safer from threat actors, but if its your ISP you’re worried about they’ll still have access to your actual IP if you use their DNS to search for the VPN provider in the first place (same with VPS). Would love some insight!
