Think of it like this:

Visualize a connection that has:

  • Your Computer
  • Your home router
  • Your Internet Provider
  • The server of the website or service you want to connect to

Your attempt to load the page makes the computer reach out to your network, which talks to your ISP, which talks to the destination page.
(It’s more complex than that, with a lot more parts to make that connection, but it should help understand).

Now, the issue is that the website server knows where the connection came from - that can hold privacy implications, or maybe your ISP or country are blocked from using the site.

A proxy is kind of a ‘hopscotch’ field between your ISP and the website server - you tell all traffic ‘go over there to that server in Iceland before loading the page’, for example.
Upside is that the website now sees the traffic as coming from another direction and may react differently. Downside is that, because it’s an extra hop, traffic may be a bit slower.

Now, does that mean any VPN is a proxy? Kind of.
The main difference between a VPN and a standard proxy is that a VPN encrypts any traffic on it, while a proxy only acts as a ‘pass-through’, forwarding the traffic but not altering it in any way.

Do you know what WiFi is? It’s not related to proxies

A proxy is a server your traffic goes through. This gives more examples and different types

I vagualy know what wifi is. Its related to proxies in my usage cases and i thought it was related because i saw it similar pages. I wanted to know about both because i can use it for my usage cases

Because i use them sometimes for stuff such as checking accounts with checkers for fortnite etc. (Not 100% legaI) and it says enter proxy (or) socks4, socks5 or http, depends which i use but i dont really know how they work and how to get access of them. Why cant you just type in random numbers? I lastly would like to know about IPv6 etc.
