How to Get 90s Supermodel Hair – Acajou

maximios September 17, 2025 Beauty

90s supermodel hair (just like almost everything beauty and fashion-wise from the 90s) is in. Luckily this is a hairstyle that looks good on everyone AND is easy to achieve.

90s supermodel hair is characterized by large, bouncy curls, lifted roots, and long-face-framing layers. This is a look that doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to have some body and some curl for some carefree movement in the hair.

Even a newbie to hair styling will be able to get this down and we’ll guide you through it step by step. If you don’t get it exactly right the first time, practice makes perfect with this hairstyle. And for hair as voluminous, lightweight and bouncy like this, we promise it’s worth it!

How to Get 90’s Supermodel Hair, Step by Step

Getting 90s supermodel hair is not too difficult, but to get enough volume the right size of curls, and curls that last, follow these steps!

1. Start with clean hair

You’ll want to start with clean hair to shampoo away any buildup. Using a hair gloss in the shower will give you shinier, smoother hair. This is a look that really enhances healthy shine, so amp it up!

2. Dial up the mousse

For volume, use a hair mousse. You’ll want to wait until your hair is 60-70% damp so the strands will hold the mousse. Take an egg-sized amount of mousse and apply it to your roots. (You don’t want to use too much more than this otherwise you’ll end up with some crunchy strands.)

Massage in so you roots are saturated in the mousse. Then take the rest of the mousse and coat your hair all over.

I love the Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse and the Living Proof Thickening Mousse, but any mousse will do.

3. Use a blow dryer

Next, you’ll want to take a blow dryer for a smooth, shiny blowout, but you’ll want to blow dry at an angle to get maximum volume.

Use a round brush and brush the hair outwards (or upwards if you’re blow drying the hair at the crown of your head). For the smoothest blowout, use a concentrator nozzle on your blow dryer. Aim the concentrator nozzle towards the root and follow the brush as you move both towards the end of your hair.

If you don’t have an incredibly smooth blowout after this, don’t panic. Practice makes perfect, and you can still get the 90s supermodel blowout without a perfectly smooth base.

4. Go for a curling iron

Yes, you’ll need another heat tool, but this is important! It’s not important here that your curls are perfect.

Before you curl your hair, get out your velcro rollers. You are going to use the curling iron and velcro rollers together.

It’s a good idea to section off your hair with hair clips. This will help you avoid tangling your hair, mixing curled and uncurled strands, and will leave you with a smoother hairstyle.

Now, get out your curling iron. A standard 1-inch curling iron is great, but any other size barrel will do fine as well. Curl your hair under so that the hair coming out of your head is on top. Wait a few seconds (no more than 10!) and take your hair out. Touch the hair to make sure it is hot.

5. Velcro Rollers

Now that you have a curl in your hand, take a velcro roller. The size of the velcro roller will depend slightly on your length, but in general the bigger the better. 2.5”-3” rollers are great for those with longer hair. 1”-2” rollers are better for those with shorter hair. Larger rollers give less curl and more body and volume, which is what we’re going for.

With the velcro roller, wrap your just-curled hair, starting with the end of your hair. Once you’ve reached your roots, keep the roller in place with a clip (these often come with your velcro rollers.)

Repeat these steps with the curling iron and the velcro rollers until you’ve completed your whole head.

6. Light hairspray to finish

As you wait for your hair to cool and mold to the shape of the velcro rollers, give your hair a spritz of some light hairspray for hold. A texture spray is great for light hold and a spritz of extra volume.

I love the Serge Normant Instant Volumizing Spray (which is used on dry hair) and the Chi Infra Texture Dual Hair Spray.

How to Get a 90s Blowout without Rollers

A 90s blowout can be achieved in a few different ways, including without rollers. Curl your hair with a curling iron use a hair clip or bobby pin to pin the hair onto your head in a curl as if there was a roller there. This will still hold the curl in place.

Another way to get a 90s blowout without rollers is to twirl a curling iron as you curl your hair to give a looser curl and bouncier hair.

90s Supermodel Haircut

The 90s supermodel haircut is one with lots of layers all around the head, and shorter,  face-framing layers that are chin-length. This haircut will give your hair lots of lightweight movement and increased volume.
