Would using a VPN allow Americans to still access TikTok if it’s banned?

Canadian citizen here. I have been hearing so much about the TikTok ban in the US recently and was just thinking about how an actual ban like that would involve 100% censorship of the app for all American citizens. Which then led me to wonder if using a VPN would still allow them access if they set their location to a different country? Am I missing something obvious when it comes to censorship?

The ban will not stop current users in any way. The ban will only stop the app from being easily accesible in the app stores.

From what I gather if you have the App you will be okay but you will not receive any updates. The App will not be available on the App Store or Google Play in America.

Where did you hear that? The last I heard, ByteDance said that if banned, the app would “go dark” in the US, which seems to mean just shut down for all users.

Wait, so if I install the app and create an account before it gets banned, I can access it and watch videos after the ban without needing a VPN?

So would a mobile user still be able to access it through the browser website?

That’s my understanding. There also won’t be any app updates so it will slowly get less and less secure but it should continue to function.

I’m currently not a user and it won’t let me watch any in the browser. It just redirects to download the app. But they could change that.
