Windscribe VPN and IPLeak.net

I recently got in on the lifetime Windscribe VPN deal, and I’ve been trying to learn about how the services generally work, etc…, but I have a few questions.

First, on ipleak.net, under WebRTC detection, there’s a field that says Local IP Address - what exactly is that, and should it be different than the other numbers?

Second, while the IP addresses at ipleak will often be those of the VPN as reported by the Windscribe widget, they won’t always, and they don’t always match. For example, right now, the top IP address is different than my widget and in Utah; the WebRTC one is in Virginia and matches the widget; and the DNS is in NYC and doesn’t match the widget (though it’s similar to the one in Utah).

I have Windscribe, along with the Windscribe firewall, turned on. Should I be worried?

First I also got this deal, so far so good loving the service :).
Second question, are you using windscribes app or extension in your browser? as they are different/

As the other user said all ips should match your windscribe ip otherwise your leaking and or somethings going on.

If you see “WebRTC detection or Local IP address” and it shows an IP, that is your real IP address and what sites / programs can pick up on and see who you really are and or from. Webrtc is for real time Communication/ video calls etc, not need. You can go through and turn it off by hand but as mentioned just download an extension and turn it off that way easier.

The IP address on there (ip leak) should match your windscribe IP address as should DNS however sometimes dns could be from a different location depending on how or what you have set up, as long as it’s not your personal / ISP dns you should be fine.

Worried; depends on what you’re doing to be honest. I’d be worried as im only half protect for example.

You are also aware Windscribes firewall is an internet kill switch, stops all traffic from leaving your machine if you get disconnected or it fails.

If you have any questions let me know happy to answer + windscribes owner is on reddit.

… Hope this helps a little bit.

All three IPs should be exactly the same (or four, if you also use torrent address detection) and belong to your VPN provider - this is what I see when using a VPN. Different WebRTC IP is leaked by your browser - if you use Chrome, look for an extension called ‘WebRTC Network Limiter’ (you can google solutions for other browsers).

Don’t worry too much about your LAN ip being detected. Running the desktop app with firewall ON will eliminate WebRTC leaks of your WAN ip.

How these geo-location sites work is they have a database of IP addresses that map to locations. Many of these “ip checker websites” have very outdated databases, so it may still be showing IP location from many years ago. IPs get transferred from host to host all the time, so the IP of that particular server must have been in the detected country in the past.

Our servers are physically in locations that they are claimed to be in, you can verify this empirically by performing a traceroute to the server itself.

If you must use an “ip checker” website, we recommend http://ipinfo.io as it has the latest IP database.

The reason why the IP shown inside the App may be different from what you would see in your browser is the fact that you’re also connected in the extension, which basically does a “double hop” and you essentially double proxy your traffic which will have speed penalties as well. The browser extension will still block ads and trackers in the OFF state.

Anyone have any luck getting OpenVPN on pfSense to connect to Windscribe? I’m having absolutely no success.

Thanks!

I’m running both the Chrome app and the Windscribe app; so they’re both on.

The numbers are a bit all over the place. IP and DNS are currently showing up as tzulo in Florida, but WebRTC is showing up as matching the Leaseweb IP in Virginia that matches the Windscribe app, so something’s going on.

And yep, I know it’s an internet kill switch. I’m testing on my laptop, but the plan is to have it running on my HTPC which I have on auto-boot/login, so I won’t be monitoring whether it’s running. I’d like it to be “set it and forget it”.

Could definitely use some point getting to that point!

Fantastic, thanks! And thanks for being available to answer questions here! Loving the service so far - super easy to set up, unobtrusive, and it hasn’t affected speeds enough to worry about!

I just signed up a couple days ago. Been using OpenVPN on my android phone. I think you may need the “pro” version though.

Yes - I have the service setup in pfSense - took a little work but works great.

Hmm, running in Incognito mode in Chrome displays all the right IP addresses. Is ipleak caching something that would display old info?

All i can think of is your windscribe ext is on curise mode which changes your ip or something.

I just connect and run ipleak through firefox with webrtc blocker on and its fine for me no issue same as edge / chrome so can only assume that, i did disable their ext though.

Sweet, sounds like what I do with one of my windscribe Connections

Also IPleak will show up to date information as it does it when you go to the site, other sites to try are these:
