With AT&T I got text messages without mobile data, but it seems when I turn on mobile data I get text messages that I didn’t get when it was off. This doesn’t always happen, but it seems to happen at least consistently.
Did this happen to anyone?
I have the sprint kickstart and loving it so far (except for the text message issue)
Do you have an iPhone or android?
Why do you turn off data?
MMS does not go over Wi-Fi on the iPhone. Group messages are usually sent as MMS and of course pretty much anything that isn’t just plain text is also MMS. You will not receive MMS messages while cellular data is turned off.
Afaik (correct me if I’m wrong) you can’t text over WiFi with Sprint. Only on the 3 other carriers.
Is it in a Sprint-covered area? I’m wondering if its roaming on a GSM network likr AT&T or TMO so maybe they’re sent over data for some reason. Even if the carrier still says Sprint, check to see if its actually TMO since they have that roaming agreement.

Security. I use WiFi with a VPN so I prefer not to have another VPN-less internet connection when WiFi turns off or I go somewhere without WiFi.
Also, I’m not really sure if mobile data is a requirement. Just that when I turn on mobile data I immediately get texts from earlier
One issue is if I keep WiFi and cellular data on, my phone only uses the WiFi, so WiFi must be turned off to get MMS?
It’s not over WiFi, is it? It’s not imessage, it’s just a regular text message where my WiFi is on and mobile data is off
Does this mean I also can’t receive texts over just WiFi.

Can I send text messages over Wi-Fi?
Android phones: Both SMS (text) and MMS (pictures and group texts) messaging is supported in Wi-Fi Calling mode.
iOS phones: SMS (text) is supported in Wi-Fi Calling mode. MMS (pictures and group texts) requires cellular coverage. Apple’s iMessage to other iOS devices is supported over Wi-Fi.
iMessage uses wifi and data.
Missing out on iMessage, it’s great.
If having an always-on VPN, including over Mobile Data, is important, you should consider a multi-platform VPN like SurfEasy: https://www.surfeasy.com
I use it and it’s fantastic. Have a look and see if it meets your needs.
What do you mean security? You Sprint Data connection is encrypted. When some of the other carrier’s data stream were hacked open, Sprint(and Verizon) wasn’t.
If you turn on wifi calling you should be able to still get texts.
No. For iPhone, MMS messages will come over the cellular data portion/channel, not the Wi-Fi. Just because you’re on Wi-Fi doesn’t mean that you aren’t using Cellular Data in some respect for services such as these.
If you intentionally disable Cellular Data of course, you aren’t using Cellular Data and you therefore won’t receive MMS, even if you’re on Wi-Fi.
