Why is internet slow?

I pay for 1000MBps of internet through Xfinity, but it’s constantly slow and spotty, even disconnecting at times. Also when I run an internet speed test, it says my download speed is only 15 Mbps?? At the price I pay for premium fast internet, why is it not better?

I have tried restarting the modem, and I have the xFi gateway.

If after troubleshooting everything is still slow definitely have a Comcast tech come check it out. I had the same problem and Comcast insisted everything was perfectly fine and I finally convinced them to send a technician out and he confirmed the issue and went up the pole on the street corner and found the main junction box was one of the original broadband junction boxes from the early 80s that supported 1000 mbps for the entire street so each house was only getting 10-15mbps

Their modem/router is not performing optimally. I have recently purchased and installed a new router, and I am now experiencing improved internet speeds.

Figure out if it’s the wireless that’s slow, or the rg6 cable that’s slow. To do that, plug in an Ethernet wire directly into the modem. Then see if the speed is vastly improved. If the speed is improved, then move on to wireless troubleshooting.

It’s Xfinity. Good luck trying to get it fixed or even calling to an actual human being.

Had similar problem. Old house wires were causing the problem. Had to run a new direct line from their access point directly to the cable modem fixed the issue.

Don’t test using wifi, only wired connections.

What are you testing it on because different devices pull different speeds and if you’re using an android phone you have to disconnect the cellular data to see what the speed that your phone is pulling correctly but unless you’re using a ps5 to speed test or a really good gaming computer you’re not going to see the 1000mbps even if the modem is capable of the output your device likely is not capable of handling it - an ex Xfinity employee.

I apologize that you are experiencing issues with your internet speed! I depend on the internet to work from home most days, so I know what it is like to need a fast and reliable internet connection. We will definitely get to the bottom of what is causing your issue!

Can you please send a Modmail https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=/r/Comcast_Xfinity with your name, the name on your account if different, and the service address.

most likely somethings wrong with the signal to the modem. Are there any splitters on the line you could remove?

Xfinity needs to check the outside cable. It could be faulty or have water in it.

Some quick troubleshooting steps:

Check your ethernet cable and make sure it isn’t cut. Upgrade to cat 8 ethernet cable restart PC, modem, and router. Upgrade modem or router. Use a password manager and make unique passwords on your wifi and ISP logins (basically all your logins on the web and mobile apps) with 20+ characters of symbols, numbers, and letters. Use 2factor authentication and passphrases. 1password and Nordpass are great password managers. Use a vpn that changes the ip. Some great vpns are Expressvpn, mullvad vpn, and nordvpn. Update Operating System, Drivers, video card, etc. Use antivirus not Norton or McAffee. I hear great things with windows defender and bitdefender. Upgrade network card and wifi attachment if needed.

Hope this helps

I was the last house on a line and previous owners didn’t have xfinity. It kept dropping on me irregularly. Called like 5 times. Had a tech come out twice. Finally one day a crew showed up and fixed a “pulled socket”. A connection was basically pulling out on the pole.

I second this! My WiFi speed has significantly improved since buying a new router. Still sometimes lags, but much better than what it was before!

This here, crowded WiFi is something out of any ISP’s control.

I’m using a laptop. I can’t even watch a video without some buffering.

But even on my phone, with the data off and just WiFi, things like instagram reels keep stopping and starting or just never load.

why create a subreddit when you are not answering questions here?

The “I work from home and can relate” statement is all they say but can not fix anything… time to change services…
