I had Norton for my old one and there is about 6 months left on the subscription. The thing is, I have seen people over the years really trash Norton, I have been a customer for a long time with them. But I feel I want to just switch though. People say it really slows down your computer, I noticed a little over the years but now with a new laptop I don’t want it to be slow. Mcafee was included with the trial and I have not expanded my options before because I thought Norton did a good job. Should I just stay and get the remaining months with Norton then switch? Get Mcafee (I mean they offered a year for $20 one time subscription which seems nice)? Or use the one from Webroot (I think it is) from with what the laptop came with? Or maybe there is a better antivirus software?
Weird that TotalAV doesn’t get more attention. It’s been catching stuff that Defender missed for me, and it runs way lighter than Norton.
I noticed it’s 80% off right now if you grab it from their site: https://www.totalav.com/specialdeal
Defender’s fine for basic protection, but I wouldn’t trust it alone.
Norton is a virus, the only things you need are common sense, windows defender, firefox + ublock origin and malwarebytes for scans.
1 don’t be stupid
2 windows defender is fine
3 use ublock origin (adblocker)
Happy with Bitdefender, never had any issues across the years.
If you dont download anything except from trusted verified sources, Windows Defender is fine.
No network connection.
Kaspersky Internet Security was my favorite for many years. Sadly, it is no longer available in America.
If you don’t do anything risky, like downloading games from strange sources or downloading some ram, the Microsoft defender Is good enough.
any antivirus + common sense
Norton and McAfee are absolutely horrific when it comes to resources… not to mention they’re exceedingly invasive and difficult to remove and a single issue leaves you completely without internet. Horrible software. Just about anything you can find is better than either of those. My personal fav used to be avast until it started being not the best for gaming and causing issue. I don’t like defender because it almost purposely hides itself, even when it finds something it thinks is a virus I often don’t even get notified… just poof application doesn’t work anymore. Avg isn’t bad tho either… bitdefender was mentioned that ones decent too. Also saw mention of adblocker…get this. the built in adblocking and popup blocking within any browser is not adequate enough. Many of these antivirus software also come with browser add-ons. You don’t really need a firewall to come with it. Almost everyone is behind a hardware firewall now days anyway, if you have a router or gateway, unless you turned it off yourself or placed your device in the DMZ then you’re behind a hardware firewall… between that and windows firewall you’re pretty good. Always remember the more stuff watching your internet traffic like av and firewall etc etc the slower its gonna be. There is such thing as too much security. The idea is to find the ideal level of security for the user based off usage so its balanced between performance and security.
Windows defenders + Malwarebytes (free version is fine just manually scan occasionally) as long as you use common sense and avoid downloading or opening sketchy files windows defender will do just fine.
Common sense really is the strongest antivirus.
Do not install McAfee, and do not install Norton. Windows defender + common sense is what you need, and they’re free!
Be rest assured of one thing: Whether you choose Norton or McAfee, when your subscription period is winding down, they will begin to hound you at every turn to renew. And believe me, they are relentless, because it’s all automatic.
The only way to rid yourself of the non-stop attack is to renew, or get another computer or reinstall your OS. Once either of them are installed, they are an infection as bad as any malware…
Avast or Bitdefender. With Malwarebytes on the side. Don’t just solely depend of rely on Windows security. It’s coming from Microsoft after all. The company built by Bill Gates who still has his hands and fingers in the company.
Kaspersky was good too but you know the story with them and the US govt. Looks like TikTok is or will be getting the same treatment soon.
Windows Security (Previously called Windows Defender) is enough.
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, for added protection you can use Microsoft Defender. It protects up to 5 devices and has family protection, malware protection, phishing, live scanning of sites and links and much more.
Microsoft Defender app is also available on phones.
Microsoft had a renaming structure a while ago but people still refer to Windows Security as Windows Defender as it is still essentially the same but just renamed.
Microsoft Defender is part of the paid subscription to Microsoft 365 (Previously Office 365) and offers enhanced protection over the basic Windows Security antivirus.
I would recommend using sophos, otherwise just use defender and scan your pc once in a while with Malware bytes anti malware.
windows defender is fine for most. Eset is better for its low resource consumption but its not cheap.
Windows Defender is more than enough, coupled with common sense and an Adblock
You don’t need to pay for an antivirus! Norton and McAffee are basically viruses. They slow your PC down and constantly beg for your money while being purely useless💀
Windows Defender.
Nothing else.
