I’m hoping others have a similar use case and can help me pick an access point.
My setup is I have a 1 gig license CHR with WireGuard configured in a data center in the USA. I’m in another country and instead of my phone, tablet, laptop and ROKU all needing WireGuard networking I’d like a single access point to route all to my WireGuard VPN. Added networking note is my local ISP changes my public IP every few days otherwise I would just do site to site. I had a hAP ac lite in use before but the new area has better than hundred meg internet so I’d like gigabit capable AP.
Easy:) did you setup already?
As long as your IP is static in the States, or you use the Mikrotik dynamic dns thing your home internet doesn’t need to be a static IP. Use a Hex router or higher to send all your home traffic via and just use any AP that suits your needs. Or run a vlan on home router that sends traffic via Wireguard and configure the AP with a seperate SSID that has that vlan… then you can easily switch…
Recently I tested ubiquiti U6PRO, it has 4x4 MIMO on 5ghz which was able to deliver gigabit to my macbook. This was with a single SSID. When I set two SSIDs on this AP, speed dropped to about 600mbps.
I did. I was just struggling with which one to select. I went with the hAP ax lite. It caps out around 400meg on the VPN which is fine because the place I installed it caps out at 300/300.
Great! Foolproof way to get best wi-fi: 160mhz bandwidth will give you 1gbps+, while 80mhz bandwidth will give up to ~800mbps. Preferrably use Wi-Fi 6 (or 7, but it will take a while for Mikrotik to adopt it). Obviously, if client device doesn’t support such tech (wifi 6) or 180mhz bandwidth - it’s sort of useless.
So if you are after Mikrotik - go search what they offer. If you already have wi-fi of Mikrotik and it has Wi-Fi 5Ghz band, then see if you can install a new driver (alternative wireless package) as it will greatly boost wifi speed (almost double). I don’t recall prerequisities, such as required flash storage for this package, but you can check it out.
Have fun!
