Which antivirus and VPNs should i consider using?

I’m running with the bare basics that came with the computer. I’ve heard people always say to use a VPN and antivirus software.

Why is this always “heard people” and “some people” or “read online”?

Cite your sources so we can mock them.

Windows defender +common sense

Unless you have specific needs, you don’t really need to consider either IMO. Windows got built-in antivirus, that’s good enough for most people.

The need for a VPN has been greatly exaggerated by people paid to advertise them on YouTube and elsewhere. They won’t generally make you safer online or protect you from hackers. If you like to watch streaming services from other countries or get a better deal on renting a car abroad then you might have a need for one.

For antivirus use the built in windows security. As for a VPN, that depends on use case and how much you’re willing to pay.

no one say antivirus software.

use what windows comes with. free and works fine.

vpn you probably dont need. cause you thought you need antivirus when you dont.

I guess that makes sense. I’ve heard some people saying to use VPNs and antivirus to protect your computer while online.

If you really need the best VPN, I recommend Mulvad VPN, but unless you know exactly why you need a VPN, you don’t need it at all. By the way, all free VPNs are scamms, they sell your data. The same goes for anti-virus software, Windows defender for da win I guess

ESET are a reasonable good anti-virus software, but can be a bit annoying if you don’t put the right settings

As for VPNs, I don’t use them, simply because I don’t believe a word on the marketing of such things

Anti-virus software is usually worse than viruses these days. Use nothing but Windows Defender, and if your computer came with something else pre-installed (McAfee, AVG, Norton, etc.) delete that shit.

As for VPN, if you don’t know what it is and already have a specific reason you need it, then you don’t need it.

The people you’ve heard don’t know what they’re talking about.

Bonafide fucking loser.

y do u expect APA citation on a reddit post u fucking nerd

I dont see you citing your sources

Thank you. I don’t really know much on this topic.

Most of the reasons for using VPNs, is because you can’t access certain sites that only locals can access, and for countries that have dictatorships that block certain access. You’re correct about its mostly influencers that tend to advertise VPNs, and then claim they’re not being sponsored, if they weren’t being sponsored, then why do they advertise? lol

A VPN will not protect your computer from anything while using the internet, what it does is provide an encrypted tunnel (though sometimes it’s not even encrypted) to a server that can hide your true IP.

Windows defender + common sense is good enough antivirus.

If you don’t know why you need a VPN, you don’t need one. And people saying ‘it helps with privacy’ are talking rubbish - the nordVPN adverts I keep seeing going ‘protect your sensitive data from being spied on’ are totally lying - a VPN will not offer any more protection to your data IF it could already be spied on, the VPN endpoint is the servers owned by the VPN company, from their servers to the service is a totally normal connection, and if you are putting personal details into a website without SSL no VPN can save you. If the website is secured with SSL, a VPN offers no extra protection.

I use a VPN I self host for a convoluted remote desktop and clientless VPN system. So long as at minimum the target is connected with the openVPN client (normally my desktop), I have firewall and IPtables routing set up to forward specific traffic to specific VPN client IPs, so I can connect to devices on the VPN from outside the VPN without a client - provided i use the correct protocol.

Thank you. I’ve heard people mention VPNs and antivirus. I just had what came on my computer. I was worried that i missed something or if i could get viruses/malware easily online.

Thank you for clearing this up for me.

VPN providers are usually incorporated in Panama and co where there is almost no legal oversight and you basically just route your stuff via them, so they can see what you do. So instead of FB seeing you connecting you have FB seeing you login and the VPN provider knows you went to facebook (and can resell that data)
