What is the best open source vpn for android?
I recommend OpenVPN for Android it works better than OpenVPN Connect and supports a lot more features. It’s open source.
This is a VPN client. It’s not the service, it can be used with any VPN.
I’m assuming you mean vpn client?
Isn’t there a VPN client built into android? Cyanogenmod has a “VPN” settings option.
Good question. A killer feature would be if it only kicks in if a specific app is opened and only for this app.
OpenVPN Connect is not fully opensouce -
Noob question. What’s the difference?
I don’t think they have an official Android-client but they have instructions on their website on how to connect through 3rd party Android-clients such as OpenVPN Connect
They’re is one in Android but it doesn’t support OpenVPN so you got to use an app for that.
that is more then likely an additional Cyangenmod feature. I know my HTC M8 with 4.4 and Sense 5.0 doesn’t have that, but I think my Nexus 7 tablet (with cyangenmod) does.
That post makes no mention of “OpenVPN for Andorid”, much rather it says “OpenVPN Connect for Android” which the forum claims is partially closed source.
I however I am not referring to “OpenVPN Connect” but much rather a similarly named “OpenVPN for Android”.
“OpenVPN for Android” is licensed under GPL and the source code is available here GitHub - schwabe/ics-openvpn: OpenVPN for Android
A VPN is the service you buy from a company. You use their servers to route your internet traffic. A VPN client is what you use to connect to their servers. These normally support a few different connection types (OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, etc)
That being OpenVPN connect is a great client for android.
My bad, must of had a brain fart as I thought you recommended Connect.
And with that I totally agree with you… OpenVPN for Android is what I would also recommend.
Ohhh so there’s no such thing as a free vpn then? So open vpn is not a vpn just what you use to connect? Hmmmm…
Thank you for the correction!
OpenVPN is a VPN protocol which is open source. You still need somewhere to connect to though, which is where the premium servers come in. You can of course configure your own server, but that would most likely defeat the object of anonymity as you would still break out from your own connection, unless you pay for a VPS somewhere. If you just want to get around firewalls, using your home connection is fine.
There are free VPNs but they are usually slow. You should pay for a VPN, some of them (like PIA) are rather cheap.
