I spend a good deal of time in Arizona and it is difficult to watch Canadian television from there.
I have tried VPNs but most of them if not all of the big companies are blocked by default. You cannot remote into any of the Canadian apps to watch TSN or Sportsnet, using the Shaw or ignite app. It knows you do not have a proper Canadian IP.
I used to remote into my computer at home and then bring up Shaw or ignite on a browser and watch it that way. It was a little laggy, but it worked.
However, the app I for that, Remote desktop PC, now blocks the video feed for some reason I don’t know why. I have spoken to them at length and they can’t fix it.
I have Windows 11 Pro and I believe if I set up the native remote PC connection that the video feed will work.
I have read extensively on this forum of all the issues with the Shaw app and port forwarding. Before I get into that, I wondered if others have a better solution to watch Canadian television in the US. I don’t mind paying for a solution if the app is good and allows me to watch TV and also manage my computer.
Are there any suggestions for watching Canadian TV from the US?
In case anybody is wondering, I am Canadian and pay for all these services in Canada. I just want to watch them when I’m away from home.
Get a decent router that can be a VPN endpoint for you at home. Then when on the road, connect to it and all the services will still think you are at home.
Someone I know with a place in Mexico brought a shaw satellite dish down there, it’s called shaw direct now but used to be Star Choice. Anyhow, apparently they have no qualms with you bringing their stuff to another country and setting it up elsewhere. Though thats another monthly bill I suppose.
Just to “me too” the thread, setup a VPN at home. I use openvpn running on a Linux server. I just picked up a fire stick and sideloaded the openvpn client. Now I have a portable ignite tv app that I can plug into any TV while abroad.
Or run a VPN server on a PC at home like WireGuard, OpenVPN, etc. Ir doesn’t have to be on your router. But you might need someone to reset it if something happens.
I also brought a satellite dish down to Arizona and had Shaw Direct Satellite for many years. Unfortunately, they decommissioned the last Satellite pointing south to Arizona and Mexico last year.
There is no service anymore from Shaw satellite direct in the southern US. That was the perfect situation. As you say, even though it was a second monthly bill at least you could watch all the Canadian shows normally.
