I’ve heard that running a VPN while using TOR will hinder security depending on the configuration. So what would happen if I was running a VPN on my main/ host OS (Windows 10) then ran 1 virtual machine and used TOR on the virtual machine, would that increase security? Or just what would happen in general.
And I have another question. If my host OS was running a VPN, I had a virtual machine running a VPN, and in the virtual machine I had another virtual machine which that was running TOR (No VPN), would that be more secure? Or would that just be pointless.
Future statement ~ thanks for the help
Edit: My Reddit’s tight, and not letting me see this one comment, the person who posted the first comment please repost, cheers lmao (I saw part of it on my notifications, I just need you to repost it so I can see it thanks)
As long as you’re connecting to Tor through a VPN, and not connecting to a VPN through Tor, it won’t have any ill effects. It will make your connection slower, and probably won’t add any meaningful anonymity or security, but it won’t undermine the protection offered by Tor.

No and yes. If the VPN on your host and the VPN on the VM are from the same VPN provider there is no advantage. But If you use VPN provider X on your host and on your VM VPN provider Y, the VPN Provider Y in the VM does not know your real IP adress as long as you only establish the connection to this VPN provider Y through the VPN from provider X. The first TOR Node (Your entry node to the TOR Network) only knows the IP from VPN provider Y and only provider Y knows that you are using TOR. VPN provider X cant see your TOR connections but he can see that you establish a VPN connections to a VPN Server. In a case where you have to hide that you are using TOR under all situations, this might be a useful strategy.
Basically the security risk you have with a vpn is if the vpn provider gets compromised compared to an anonymous tor node. I have linked a video that explains how tor can be compromised but overall unless your network is being monitored there isnt a big reason to use a vpn. Or if you trust your vpn provider a lot but that is the security risk with a vpn plus marketing for vpns nowadays is super misleading.
I think that would be good. Imo using a reliable vpn with tor is fine and doesn’t affect security. I have a vpn on and use it while on tor.
Hi , i think it’s about what stuff to be trust. It is corresponding , because if tor over vpn or vpn over tor , you must connect to first node. For instance , if you connect to tor , the first node could capture your any traffic as well as possible. If vpn over tor , the vpn provider still can do a same things. But vpn over tor has a benefit is your real ip address never exposed to tor node or tor record. If tor over vpn , your real ip address will exposed.
So wat is the difference if you connect “Tor through a VPN” or “Connecting a VPN through Tor”
So if we say towards reputation. A companies should better than unknown right?
It’s a pretty huge difference. If you connect to a VPN through Tor then that VPN knows both who you are and where you’re connecting to. It basically undoes almost everything you’ve gained through Tor, might as well just use the VPN.
Sorry bout all these questions and shit, thanks for helping me out tho, wat are bridges? I bet I look like such a dumb ass lmao
No worries! Bridges are proxies meant specifically to disguise the fact that you’re connecting to Tor. They’re meant for people that live in fairly authoritarian countries, where connections to Tor are either illegal or would draw very negative attention. There’s more information on the Tor project’s website (and I think I link to it in the post, but I’m on mobile atm)
