I have a VPN router, TP LINK ER605, a Synology NAS, and Subscriptions to 2 “lifetime” VPN providers as well.
I already setup my NAS with VPN1 and its connected fine. Could i setup the router with VPN2 or even add another profile/connection from VPN1 to it and connect the NAS to the internet that way? The ER605 doesnt support OpenVPN, so i would need to configure it with L2TP which VPN2 supports.
Also, If i want to VPN into my own home network, thats a different type of VPN and separate from the above providers… correct? And I would also need separate settings on the router to enable it?
You could install Synology’s VPN server on your NAS, it handles OpenVPN, L2TP, etc. Then you just need to open the appropriate ports in the router to get to the NAS. No need to pay for a service…
If I may ask, which vpns are you planning to use? Most, if not every, liftime vpn has horrible logging policies which will violate your privacy and make you think you’re “completely safe” under these services.
Raspberry pi zero W running pihole and pi vpn
-wiregaurd on devices.
Raspberry pi 3 running openmediavault and syncthing
-syncthing installed on all my devices also.
This allows me to access my home network from anywhere to:
-Get ad free service
-access my nas securely
-maintain the devices and my home automation hub (hubitat)
-back up all my phone pictures and other media from all my devices to my nas which i can access. its like paying for google cloud storage, without paying for a less secure cloud storage service.
If you mean hide internet traffic from your ISP, you have already achieved that by connecting to a VPN server via a VPN client on your NAS. You dont need to connect to a VPN server on the router too.
To access your NAS remotely, you would need a VPN server, such as OpenVPN or Wireguard, hosted on a device at your address. Your router might support this too, you could try googling ‘router model VPN server setup guide’
yeah, keepsolid is pretty shit, and many have the same complaints. Keep going for windscribe as it’s a very solid vpn for torrenting and for anonymity. godspeed.
