VPN kill swtich?

Hi folks, I have a DS218 with DSM7. I have been using ExpressVPN for torrenting for 2+ years without issue. However after updating to DSM7 while doing the same thing, I received a warning from my ISP clearly showing that my activity was exposed.

I do notice that under DSM 7 the VPN would disconnect/reconnect without interrupting the internet therefore I believe this is what happened. Before DSM7 this was not an issue tho - my NAS would just be disconnected from the internet (which is also annoying).

Naiive question - does anyone know how to go back to the old logic? I don’t know if unchecking this box would do it:

Yes i know, i should probably spend time setting up a real kill switch :frowning:

Just use Docker. There are many ways to set this up properly, here’s one:

There’s no need to put 100% of your NAS’s network access behind a VPN.

I’m unsure exactly what you use to torrent on your NAS but the only way to 100% protect yourself (for a PC at least) is to bind your VPN to the torrent client (qBittorrent in my case) kill switches aren’t good enough.

That switch just makes it reconnect, needs to stop Internet traffic when disconnect or use external vpn box

A friend of mine uses Transmission OpenVPN on docker for that. The container is killed as soon as his VPN connection is down

VPN kill switches are not safe. You want to use a torrent client that binds to your VPN interface.

Thanks!! This looks legit and very helpful!

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah I do think it’s not this box.

Makes sense - any tutorial on that?
