I get it, there are only limited free servers available but this keeps connecting to only japanese servers like the free option to change the server with the timer even after that it connects to a different japanese servers. All the websites I visit turn japanese and there is no simple way to keep translating every website. I am frustrated with this. Does someone have any suggestions?
In the free VPN tier you cannot choose the country. It chooses the best f free sender location available depending on your location. If you are in Asia or US west coast, it will most likely choose Japan.
You can log out completely and log in again and there is a chance it can choose a different region to connect. But if your geographic location makes it more suitable to connect to J apan, it will.
But in your browser, depending on your search engine you can set English
On the free plan the app picks a server for you, but you should be able to switch to a different random server every 90 seconds.
If you don’t want a random server, you could download a VPN configuration file from the ProtonVPN website and either use it with the Wireguard or OpenVPN app, or use it in your system settings.
But using a VPN configuration file does not give as great ad an experience as the official app.

You don’t get a choice if you’re using a free version. Upgrade to a paid subscription and choose any server you want. Free product isn’t supposed to be enjoyable enough to not want to pay at some point.
Pay for the premium service it’s well worth it. Complaining about a free service tier is unbelievable.
Not the op and I’m on the paid plan now but I’m on the opposite side of the world from Japan, it’s literally the farthest and worst performing region for me out of all protons locations and in my experience using free for several months was it would pick japan 100% of the time, I didn’t see a single other location once
