VPN detectable at school?

I have VPN and would like to watch Netflix(blocked by school) during my lunch on my personal laptop connected to the school wifi.

If I change the Protocol to TCP it does work, however would the school know or get some notification that a computer on their system is using a VPN?

Thanks

For some reason I feel like they just wouldn’t care, but if you sign in to the wifi with school credentials, then yes. But I still doubt IT would care

No, the school cannot see that you are connected to Netflix. They will just see your device is connected to the VPN server. If the connection is encrypted, they won’t be able to see anything else.

TCP does not make difference here. Better to use UDP to avoid tcp-over-tcp issues.

would the school know or get some notification that a computer on their system is using a VPN

The quick and dirty answer is yes they will know that there is a machine connected to a VPN. They will even know which machine it is, even if it’s not their machine.

They will see that “SUB4HIRE’S LAPTOP” is connected to a VPN service for example and know it’s you if you named your laptop after yourself.

If you need to sign into school credentials before accessing the internet, they will know it was you without needing to do any sleuthing.

Bro let me know if you find the answer

It IS possible to sniff out the standard VPN applications on some next gen firewalls. For instance our work can see OpenVPN and block it if dectected, regardless of what port it is using.

Unless there is a policy that says you will be expelled if you try it, I say try it anyway.

I remember back in the day I would use Browsec on Chrome since my high school would block a lot of websites… every website worked after that.

Exactly. But if OP’s school has policies against using their internet to watch Netflix, they probably won’t take kindly toward using a VPN to circumvent rules as well. There’s also the added caveat that Netflix may detect the VPN and prevent you from streaming their content (they don’t like it when you use a proxy/VPN) so you would have to find a provider that still has IPs that are yet to be fingerprinted by whatever detection service Netflix is using. A general rule of thumb is to scan the IP using something like IPQS to find out if the IP is getting detected (already fingerprinted) or not : VPN Detection Test | VPN IP Address Check | VPN IP Test

I agree, this does seem possible.
