Very poor speeds on router with static IP

I have a static IP for Chicago, It’s a residential one to get around blocks which it does quite well,
I use an Asus AX86s and i have a 500mb internet connection at home,
As soon as i connect to the VPN it drops to 2mb, I appreciate you get speed drops with VPN’s but losing practically all my internet speed is ridiculous,
Has anyone had this issue and did you find a fix?

Thanks in advance

Try changing ports to see if it helps, perhaps change your DNS and if that fails contact technical support and see what they can do

What are you using on your router?

I looked up your router and it appears to have only a dual-core processor. That will affect VPN usage on it as mobile chipsets can’t handle high throughput of encrypted traffic. I suggest using wireguard if you can.

The AX86 has an AES-NI capable CPU.

This CPU is capable of pushing openvpn at 200/200 speeds.

Have you tested VPN speeds to any other server or only the residential?

Also, are you using Merlin Asus firmware?

Sounds like an MTU problem if the drop is that big. Try to lower the MTU/MSS to something like 1300, and try again. Or better yet, find your actual MTU: Setting correct MTU for OpenVPN | Magento Hosting by Sonassi

Well I tried talking to support and after two messages they ignored me, Thanks Usama for nothing

Hi and thanks for your reply,
I’ve only tried the residential vpn as thats all i wanted windscribe for,
I have another for Toronto and speeds on that are around the same,
Its stock firmware on my router

Yeah that means nothing to me, Not at all tech minded

Well, if you’re willing to try Merlin I highly encourage it. Things like policy routing and blocking traffic if the VPN goes down are great for power users. Also, I think people that use merlin are trying to get wireguard working on that OS and that might be much faster for you.

As to why your speeds are so slow with openvpn, I have no idea. Something seems off. What ISP do you have?

I’ll try merlin absolutely but as for setting up wireguard i’m not sure i’d want to try it, I mean i’m not that well versed in doing things like that and i wouldn’t want to screw my router up,
My ISP is Virgin media here in the UK and i have a 500mb connection,
I’m really only using the VPN for streaming,
I use Toronto for Premier League football and Chicago for F1 TV and HBO Max,
I had used just regular vpn connections from other well known companies but they were forever getting blocked and these two residential vpn’s have been totally bulletproof, They never get blocked
