Using ProtonVpn along with protonmail

Hi, I am using Mullvad and considering to switch to ProtonVPN. Is there any downside of using the VPN tied to my email account? I am paying with cryptocurrency but I am wondering what type of data are collected and linked that matters for my privacy. Thanks.

I can’t see downsides as there’s no logs on the VPN.

But each one of us see what’s inside, not only outside. So if we fear inside, we see and even create fear outside. Be conscious about other people’s perspectives, and adapt them to who you are today.

Proton is good and has no reasons it can’t be trusted. Their are some who don’t want ala ( all the eggs in one basket) meaning having a proton mail account and also lets say Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, since they will be all be tied to one account. While others don’t care about having all the eggs in one basket since it will be very convenient for them to have everything all in one. At the end of the day, it’s however u feel comfortable using services. For me, i have Mullvad and using Proton Mail

Only potential downside is if you miss a payment, it won’t happen immediately, but after a certain amount of time your email will be locked and you will unable to login and view/use it until you’ve settled your balance.

I have Proton Mail and VPN, and I like the VPN, when it works. I get frequent drops from my nearest servers, recently significantly slower speeds than Mullvad and for a week or so last month, upload speeds on many of Proton’s New York servers dropped to <10 mbps on my gigabit service, although they have come back.

In short, it’s been too frustrating for me to use daily, especially with my non-technical family frequently yelling for my tech support. If it were just me I might try to limp along.

I do use it when I need to stream something that Mullvad can’t access, and I try Proton frequently in hopes that I will again get speedy and consistent service, as I used to before several months ago.

From a security standpoint I believe that Proton VPN is Mullvad’s equal.

I use both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN. Proton is transparent and reputable, and I trust it. There are no downsides.

Thanks for your reply.
You are right, there is so much FUD and misinformation.
Tbh, I trust Proton, but I am not a very technical person, so that’s why i asked. ProtonVpn will know my ISP IP address, email address, phone number and my payment method. I remember a post stating that proton logs some data in order to combat abuse(maybe it was for preventing DDOS attacks or sth else). How can it affect users, or are there any other concerns like that? So, does no-logs mean a complete and real no log and not being able to trace back to the user? Thanks.

You are right. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for your thorough reply. I rarely experienced speed problems in Mullvad. One of the biggest problem is that in some public WiFi’s like cafes, they block Mullvad but I can use ProtonVpn after activating alternative routing. It’s an good feature.

Did you read the privacy policy? There you have a no log blog article linked:

Yes, I already have read it. I read a post in Reddit months ago which I cannot find it now. That’s why I asked.

Proton VPN will know your IP of course, as they become your virtual ISP. Also they can see live traffic (e.g to combat abuse) but they aren‘t logging (= not writting the traffic to a file) and also cannot be compelled by current law to log VPN. Basically what the blog says

That’s the answer what I am looking for and I could not find. It can see the live traffic but does not log it. For the rest, yes, I already read on the website. Thanks.

Great, happy to help. If you have further questions, feel free to ask them.
