Using BBC iPlayer on Nvidia shield outside UK

was wondering does BBC iPlayer work on Nvidia Shield outside the UK if a UK VPN is used?

Yes. I have been using the BBC iPlayer app from Canada on my Shield for years!

The app is a system app and by default is disabled because I am not in the UK, but I use a “modded” copy with a different package name, so that it installs separately from the system app version and will not disable.
Then with a VPN/smart DNS to make it look like I am in the UK, the app works perfectly.

Yes. You need to disable location permissions for the app to appear, reboot, and then use a VPN (Surfshark for me).

Yes. I live in the Netherlands and using a VPN to watch BBC iPlayer

Yes.

Although the ability for the VPN to work is the issue. For perfect results get a dedicated UK IP address.

Also, you might need to “enable” it again

It works for me using nord , but not mullvad

I use This DNS proxyservice Instead of a VPN, everything streams fast and I never have any issues with it. Been using it for years.

Be aware that the link has an affiliate ID on it but feel free to remove it if you do use the site

I’m having similar issues with iPlayer outside the UK on both the shield and android TV. I used a dedicated IP and also used the modded Ashley version until it became unresponsive…
If anyone knows of a current modded version I’d be grateful.

Can always run tailscale through a raspberry pi or sbc from your house.

Express VPN works fine. Watched Glastonbury this year using it.

With VPN Unlimited is a hit and miss: sometimes it works, sometimes it needs a few nudges and restarting the app. But it worked for Glastonbury and the coronation concert and events.

Not tried BBC iPlayer because I live in the UK, but I’ve had good experience with ProtonVPN on my Shield for Peacock US.

Has anyone gotten the standard Android TV apk variant working on their shield? I have the Shield variant side loaded and working, but don’t love that it’s capped at 720p, instead of 1080p like the standard version.

It still asks for a TV license. Any way around this?

Good morning fam,
I’m still new and learning the whole Shield OS. Hoping I can get some help here.
I’m using NordVPN on my shield and when I connect to the UK server, I go the Play store and still can’t find the BBCiPlayer to download. I’m trying to watch the worldcup tomorrow and not having any luck.

I’ve even gone to the BBCiPlayer website itself, after verifying my IP is in fact in the UK, and still don’t have any luck.

Hoping I can get some help. Thanks in advance

This should help https://www.crazystreamers.com/uk/bbc-iplayer/countries/bbc-iplayer-from-abroad/

Where can one acquire this apk file?:smirking_face:

Can you help a complete non tech savvy me. Enhance on procedure how to do this. :+1:

I know this post is old, but your set up sounds exactly like ours; modded copy (from Ashley NZ from GeForce forums) on Shield with dns4me in Canada working perfectly for six years or more until a week ago, when all remotes became unresponsive after opening the app. Once on the sign in page, there is no way to get into the app.

Is your modded copy still working for you? There’s one other user who’s posted having the same issue & I’m wondering how it’s just us with this issue. I upgraded to Exp 9.0, to see if that would help with the iplayer, but it changed nothing & made it worse for Xplore functions for me. We have a 2017 Shield.

Are you on the 9.0 or 9.1 in your Shield & everything’s still fine with your modded iplayer? I’m just desperate to get this working again, so I’m looking for info wherever I can.

A million thanks if you can share if you’re set up is still working fine, if you’re on the Shield Exp 9 version & if you modded the app yourself, or did you find a modded version elsewhere too?

again, thank you thank you thank you if you can help a fellow canadian iplayer watcher
