Has anyone implemented the recent update for this app on macOS or Linux?
If you use it on a Mac or Debian based Linux distro, you’re out of luck. You cannot “update” it as you would with all other applications, but you have to do a TOTALLY FRESH INSTALL!
No use in contacting support as they’re only following how the app has been implemented.
Any comments or experiences on this subject?
At this point I’m considering switching VPN providers.
I updated on my Mac 2 days ago…working fine.
You could install via homebrew (macOS). Via homebrew you can also upgrade once a new version is released. Brew will also take care of the upgrade automatically. All you do is issue the command to upgrade and the rest is up to brew.
I’ve had little problem on macos updating release after release. Not a reinstall just update
I updated it on my Ubuntu laptop a few weeks ago with no issues.
My focus is that it cannot be updated in place but that you have to reinstall from scratch. I’ve updated apps on my Mac many times but never was it packaged such that you needed to manually uninstall first, regardless of whether they came via the App Store or elsewhere. How then did you update without first removing the old ExpressVPN? Losing the configured settings is also another issue as well. Doing this on one or two Mac’s is one thing but having to delete and reinstall from scratch on a number of Linux instances is a totally different beast.
Thank you for your input. I’ve had MacBooks for the last ten years and never heard of homebrew. I did look into this and it appears you also need to have Xcode on the system. This is the first time in ten years I would need to install a product just to upgrade a single application. Having to do this would be like using SMP/e on a large IBM mainframe system which manages the entire operating system. Then for Linux, the Debian package manager is designed to meet these requirements. There are a multitude of VPN products out there so I am getting a prorated refund from ExpressVPN, discontinuing their service, and when switching one of the factors will be update management. Thanks again.
Thanks. I’ll give it another try after I call support. When I contacted them regarding macOS they indicated I’d be best to do a fresh install. Go figure!
I didn’t had to uninstall it before installing the new update (7.5.0).
No problem. Just to clarify you can get around Xcode by alternatively installing just Xcode command line tools.
