Unable to connect to Amazon.com while on VPN

When I’m connected to VPN, I cannot reach https://www.amazon.com from my computer. This has been going on for at least a couple of weeks, maybe back to when I first started using the VPN service a month or two ago. When I disconnect from VPN, I’m immediately able to load the site without issue.

Other details:

  • I’m using the most up-to-date macOS client (v1.1.0) on macOS v10.13.5. However, I have also experienced the same issue back on 1.0.0 of the client.
  • I have the client configured to connect to the fastest US server. This usually connects me to each of the four NJ servers throughout a week. However, I have also tried to connect to random servers in other parts of the US to see if the issue persists. Same issue.
  • No other websites experience this issue. I generally use VPN all day, everyday, so this covers a wide gamut of websites of every variety.
  • I have tried both Firefox and Chrome. Both exhibit the problem (see screenshots linked above)
  • The Firefox error message seems to indicate this might be an SSL/HTTPS problem. I do notice that in both browsers the lock icon doesn’t appear in the address bar (indicating a valid certificate). When trying to load Amazon, the Firefox status bar seems to be stopping at the “TLS handshake” phase.
  • As one final troubleshooting step, I tried accessing the site from my phone and it succeeded. I was connected over the same LAN and using VPN through the OpenVPN client, connecting to whatever was deemed the “best” US server at the time of connection. I did notice, however, that I was connected through one of the servers in Texas. So, I started connecting to TX servers on my Mac until I discovered US-TX#1 does *not* have the issue. Weird, right?

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Based on my troubleshooting results thus far, I’m suspecting this might be an issue with the VPN servers, but I’m open to suggestions for troubleshooting this further. In fact, my life would be far easier if the issue is on my end.

I have tested the website with a couple of servers in the US from the +100 range - everything opens up without an issue. How exactly did you set up custom DNS?

try changing your dns?

I have a similar problem i can’t connect to BFMTV.com using firefox nor on chrome since about 2 days?

I get timeout error

Win10 openvpn core server swiss-uk

Edit it’s working now for me finnaly!

I had the same problem with amazon

I know this thread is a bit old but I have the same issue. It’s extremely annoying. Currently using latest edition of firefox and ProtonPlus customer.

When I’m running proton, Amazon takes forever to load, if at all. When I turn off proton, Amazon loads instantly. I tried proton + private browsing and I get barely loaded Amazon pages that are pretty much useless. Turn off proton and use private browsing, instant page loads.

Whats the issue here? This is the only website this happens too.

I just updated my previous comment about DNS.

UPDATE: I stand corrected I just went to ipleak.net and my DNS server is apparently whichever VPN server I’m connected to. When I’m not on VPN, my LAN is configured to go through my router and my router is configured to use 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.

The VPN servers closest to me are NJ. Are you suggesting I use one of the +100 servers instead? Either way, it might be worth looking into the under-100 servers.

Hi, I’m just following up on this again. So, the 100+ range servers are shared with basic users. I’m a Plus customer. I’d really prefer to use the dedicated servers for Plus customers.

Also, you have another Plus customer who is having a similar issue and looks like he’s considering dropping the service:https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/8z5ebg/problems_accessing_amazoncom/

My DNS configuration remains the same whether I’m VPN or not. When I have VPN turned off, I connect just fine (same DNS).

I’m not sure what the problem is. However, it’s resolved by using a VPN server that is #100 or higher. All other websites seem to have no issue, regardless of server.

Yes, it would be great if you could give them in incognito mode on any browser.

Okay… so, that was interesting… I put Firefox into privacy (incognito) mode and it loaded just fine. Do you think it’s just browser cache issue of sorts? As far as I can tell, all my plugins are loading in privacy mode, so I don’t think that would be the issue.
