ULPT: When visiting China, 80% of the time you can connect to a Chinese WiFi network with password: 88888888

Is it a security risk? Probably lol

Not 88% of the time just 80%?

Is VPN usage allowed or is it pure honeypot :honey_pot:?

This was true but more like 10 years ago.

This makes sense. The word for 8 in Chinese sounds like the word for “fortune”, so they love to use the number in store names, phone numbers, etc.

when i was there every hotel network had that as the password:3

The more old people sitting in said establishment, the higher the chance of success

The best was when most wifi routers had their admin password as “admin”. It used to be very common.

Weird, I was just in Shanghai last week and encountered several 88888888 wifi passwords including the airport lounge.

In Taiwan the password is usually the place’s phone number.

100% true. I’ve been there over 50 times and it’s almost always 8 8’s or 12345678 as the password.

And if it’s not 88888888, many times it’s the phone number of the hotel instead.

Huh. I did enter one password that was 88888888 on my trip this summer. Can’t remember if it was a hotel or restaurant, but there was at least one.

LPT: don’t go to China

Probably shouldn’t be practicing ULPTs in China, aka big data’s testing ground

CCP surveillance. No thank u

ill never have to worry about that

Yeah and any 555 numbers in America get you a free pizza delivery to I suppose ?

That’s only in NATO countries

Bah bah bah bah bah… is their phone number.
