Do you need a VPN for watching sports (football) on Kodi?
If so what are the best free or cheap options in the UK?
EG:
ProtonVPN do a free option but that has 3 countries listed as options (Holland, USA and Japan).
What benefit is there from using a VPN with such limited options?

via IPTV? sometimes, because certain internet providers mass block all sorts of traffic when premier league is on. depends on your iptv provider and your internet provider.
Via random addons? maybe, again, depends a lot on your internet provider and if they actively block stuff
vpn’s that work with kodi? actual kodi itself, very few. Within android if your box is android plenty.
Free v paid. You get what you pay for. the only cheap one thats worth it for iptv is digibit as they are setup for streaming. (and used by a few iptv providers)

You probably don’t need it, usually the VPNs are advertised by people who get commission per sale using their link, Debrids and even the IPTV streams should be just fine. Don’t lose your money for no reason.
I went back to the UK recently - so many people seem to live in fear of the “illegal kodi” 
maybe this harks back to the days of TV detector vans?

Wouldn’t be using debrid nor IPTV.
Just a bog standard Kodi 19 with a sports add-on.
This is for an older relative who isn’t tech savvy and doesn’t have lots of money to spend (hence the setup).
They’re worried, so I’m trying to get advice from experts to put their mind at ease for this hypothetical situation before they even get started.
There seems to be very little advice out there for this kind of basic setup.
