Thatoneprivacyguy did an amazing job back in the day, but unfortunately, the information wasn’t updated for ages, so it isn’t as reliable as it used to be. It was a very important and useful tool, therefore I thought maybe we could make it a community effort and bring it back.
You will see a table with scores, explanations on how each score was calculated, as well as detailed information by provider for each criteria. As of now, it has 41 providers and growing each week.
VPNs are a mess, it’s becoming such a commercial market, companies are being bought up by less reputable+bigger ones, it’s hard to know what to trust.
Tables are great (docs.google, boo) but needs to be accessible too. Top five picks for ultra security, top five for reliability of the service, top five for price.
This. And there are also a lot things that you cant measure.
For example:
ProtonVPN blocks serveral Ports for “security measures”. Their support told me:
“Please be informed that outgoing connections to some database-related ports are currently being blocked on most of our servers for anti-abuse reasons, so this could be the reason you are experiencing such an issue. Normally, any user connected to the same ProtonVPN server would have the same authorization to access the database you are willing to connect to unless there are additional security measures in place, so this is not recommended and insecure. Even if you whitelist some ProtonVPN IP addresses with your firewall, that is still not enough because any user would still be able to reach your database through the very same ProtonVPN IP address.”
In that case I was trying to connect to a mongodb on 27017. To me this measure seems ridicoulus.
Surfshark has no way of canceling your subscription via customer panel. You need to open a support ticket or chat with someone to cancel your subscription, which is a no go for me.
It takes quite a lot of time to add a new provider and follow those that are already there, so yes, I love when I get a lengthy message with information about a provider I haven’t researched yet (preferably with sources). So if you have any suggestions or information please, send them my way!
NordVPN blocked my ability to connect to any networks in China (which made my study abroad suck quite a bit since I couldn’t connect with the other students even on wifi). I wasted hours trying to fix it. It also wouldn’t function in the US but that’s a different story and a different malfunction.
I’m pretty terrible at this stuff, but that thing gave me a very bad experience.
