Time to rethink Google One

I signed up for Google One when I got my P6Pro back in March 2022. I figured the extra storage would be worth it, along with several other benefits. The VPN was cool, dark web monitoring an extra layer of security…

Flash forward to July 2024 and the only benefits left are the cloud storage. Personally speaking, I think it’s time to Google to add other services as part of One to make it a worthwhile subscription.

Free yt premium would be sick

I know exactly what you mean. All that’s now available as a benefit is Fitbit premium and nest premium. Neither of which are of any use to me

I never understand why they never bundled that with YouTube and YouTube Music Premiums. My bet is it’s another corporate block, but I would have subscribed to Google One ages ago if they just had bundled it together.

The storage for easy cross platform photo sharing of my kids pictures with family is the only reason I am still paying for Google One. The price is cheap enough that I am just not motivated to move to something else.

TBH i bought Google one just for the storage. I’m a hobby photographer and have LOADS of photos. Need a persistent cloud storage solution.

And Google offers the most bang for the buck because the same storage extends to Google photos, Google drive, Gmail, and i can share the storage capacity with my family. Plus, it’s incredibly convenient to share albums over Google photos. Almost everyone here has a Gmail account, so makes it super easy.

But yeah, they could do something like Apple one. Apple one gives storage, Apple TV, Apple music, Apple arcade.

I only pay for Google One to have more space in photos / Gmail. Cloud storage costs money :woman_shrugging:t3:

Custom domain for gmail would be a convincing feature for me.

iCloud+ offers this already on the 1$ plan.

That’s Google though, you can’t trust them to stick to anything they say.

I wan’t the VPN back.

The inclusion of Nest Aware is a no brainer for me in the UK. I was paying for it and 200GB of cloud storage anyway. The two of these separately cost me more than the 2TB plan which also includes Fitbit Premium as a bonus, plus the additional storage, just in case.

I’ve paid $2/month for years for 100gb storage. That’s all I signed up for. The price hasn’t changed. Everything syncs to it. I don’t need extras.

Call it Google One, you would think it would be one subscription for everything, but no. Turns out One just means you get just the one thing.

I wanted some cloud storage for files, photos, etc. Google’s price looked good. I subscribed. I’m satisfied with it - it’s still a good price for storage, years later.

Speaking as a European, the only thing they ever actually sold was the cloud storage.

There were no deals, despite there being a deals tab. Maybe YouTube premium had a free month or whatever. Yes the dark web stuff I guess.

The VPN… I just VPN to my homenetwork but that’s cool I guess for some people that are in the niche of knowing what a VPN is but not knowing to not use Google for that.

There was some filter for editing pictures I think?
The stuff to let you erase people in the background was afair exclusive to pixels, so no value there.

I still only have it for the storage tier. But at least in the other markets they’re now face off too.

The price is … high for storage but even if I were to nuke drive, I’d still be above the limit so I can’t really stop paying without nuking a shitton of pictures and mails which I don’t really want to.

They could be having the whole apple one thing with yt premium and music and some added stuff for Foto upload but no. No we can’t be having that now.

If you’ve got your Photos there, getting them out is a PITA. The Google Takeout downloads fail half the time even on a good, reliable, high-speed connection, and then you quickly realize that they’ve moved all of your metadata into JSON files, so you have to run a script or application to walk through all of your photos and videos to re-constitute the metadata.

I’ve since moved virtually everything from Google since opting out of Google One. Whenever Google announces a new service, I just roll my eyes because I know that it will be discontinued in relative short order.

As a P6p user I’m getting less stuff for the same price.

Google one, for us 6 series people, essentially just storage. As op mentioned. There is nothing ‘one’ about it.

What other company makes you pay the same as other users and you get less?

I guess I kind of understand adding on features and charging more for them but actively removing features while not adjusting the price to reflect fewer features is criminal.

The whole ‘no one was using the VPN so we just cancelled it’ line is BS.

If that’s the case why don’t more pixels, at least, have access to the VPN if you’re going to have it at all? Why limit it to the latest two years of models?

Google is talking out of both sides of its mouth.

I live outside of the US in a country with a week currency. The rumored prices of 9 series isn’t giving me much hope. The prices will be sky high where I am. I wonder if p7 users are going to eventually going to lose the VPN too, when this new generation is released?

I fully agree. However, I am stuck for another year since my subscription renewed 2 months ago. I am currently considering alternative storage like OneDrive.

Don’t you get Google One for free if you’re a Gemini Pro subscriber?

Don’t forget the discount on Google hardware purchases. I am waiting for an EU benefit to track the US, Fitbit premium
