TikTok ban, will a VPN work

will using a VPN work and let me use TikTok in the US ?

this is an attack on free speech and true news
the people are being censored

will using a VPN work ?

This is not an attack on free speech.

No one is being censored.

When India bans TikTok, TikTok also proactively blocks Indian account and their device IDs so simply creating a new account or using a VPN won’t work to evade the ban. They comply with the ban because they hope that there will be a policy change, and not complying will just unnecessarily antagonize the government.

This is not an attack on free speech, you’re still allowed to say whatever you want on the internet elsewhere as long as it doesn’t break the provider’s ToS (since they’re considered private property, not a public forum) or on your own infra.

Now that it’s down has anyone figured out if vpns work to watch it now?

I am on a SIM From Europe and VPN and it won’t work.

I’m sure given that a lot of crypto gambling sites are blocked in the uk and I use it to chat to the people on there etc.

You might have to pay for a decent one like express or probably cyberghost would be the best as I’m sure it’s 258 (if that’s right) end to end encrypted

All the feds accounts on here saying “not to antagonize the government and hope there’s a policy change in the future”

Suppression as it’s finest.

It is absolutely an attack on free speech.

This is also an attack on freedom to assemble

Tunnelbear is not working.

Well it’s back online :joy:

VPNs aren’t end-to-end; they can only encrypt traffic from your device to their server, after which it goes as usual to the destination server. That would be enough to handle the blocking from the government, but not if the server itself blocks US users from their device location/account history. The latter is what they do in India, they do that to not antagonize the government in case there’s a policy change in the future.
