I just picked up the Cudy X6 for $40 on Amazon’s Prime Day. It look pretty decent for the price. I’m looking to have VPN server support and decent security with updates and just kind of playing around with OpenWRT. Would you leave the RouterOS on there or flash OpenWRT Snapshot?
According to OpenWRT ToH its got: MediaTek MT7621 2 core 880Mhz, 32mb Flash/ 256mb RAM
Edit: fyi, this does not have VPN server support ootb.
Note that prebuilt snapshot images do not come with any web interface or GUI. You will need to be comfortable using a command line and remote shell to install one yourself
I’m on the same boat friend, but seems no one here have used it… and reviews says VPN is client not server so if I were you I would look into that if you are interested.
What did you end up doing? Its been $60 for awhile I was thinking of getting their cheaper model as I dont subsribe to gig speeds anyway WR1300 (AC1200)
Edit: fyi, this does not have VPN server support ootb.
FYI, I’ve got a V2 version of this and that did ship with VPN server support OOTB, though I’m mostly interested in VPN client support. Not sure if VPN server support gets added in V1 if you flash the latest official firmware update for it.
Curious how this is working for you a year later (assuming you’re still using it). Still using the default routeros or now openwrt?
(I can see https://www.cudytech.com/openwrt_software_download in Internet Archive suggesting an vendor supplied openwrt build for this at least once upon a time, though the page doesn’t currently load for me and I can’t find anywhere to download the firmware mentioned there as Internet Archive doesn’t cache the download itself. If you did move to openwrt are you using a vendor-provided build or one from the openwrt website?)
That’s good to know. A year later this little router works really good, great speeds. Although I’ve moved to a larger house, it couldn’t beam through 1500sqft, so I had to retire it. Ended up moving to a 2 AP Omada set up, of course with all the bells and whistles of a VPN router. I will be keeping this router as a backup, I’d still recommend it.
I’m still using the default one (less, flashed to the latest version). The page Téléchargement du logiciel OpenWrt – Cudy is once again accessible to me, though the link wasn’t working last week, so I’ve at least got a copy of the vendor’s build now. One thing that kept me from installing the vendor’s openwrt build is the mention of an issue with 5Ghz wifi here, and I’m not sure if it’s been solved just yet.
It’s suppored in v23 release candidates… I’m using 23-rc3 on my X6 right now, it’s working properly… flashing how-to:
get the openwrt v22 vendor release.
flash the vendor openwrt.
grab a v23-rc build from https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/
or build a new image there (remember to add luci to the installed packages field, otherwise you’ll have to configure it using ssh)
Def not a deal breaker. The prime day deal actually included a free Cudy AC1200 Wifi Extender/AP, so it was a no brainer since I was coming from a 100mb router. Even as a standard router, it seems to do the job perfectly. I’ll probably end up trying to flash the router. Git commit has some instruction
Yes, it’s doing ok for the cost. Don’t expect it to penetrate all the walls through a typical 1500sqft house (assuming you place it in the middle of the house). If your larger than 900 sqft, id look for a different setup. I’ll end up moving my Omada setup over which includes to APs, but I’m being super picky. For the avg user, this will do.
