Don’t put Sonarr behind the VPN.

If you’re in the UK, this is likely because many (most) indexers are blocked by most ISPs. So you’ll need to put Jackett, Sonarr and Radarr behind the VPN too.

The simplest way to do this is to run Sonarr, Radarr, QBT and Jacket in docker, via an ExpressVPN container. The rest of your containers (Plex, whatever) don’t use the proxy VPN container. This is exactly what I do. If it helps, here’s my docker-compose. https://gist.github.com/Webreaper/81ecda3ecc45fa61a16dfc90cfc4550d

Edit: be aware that for some private trackers you might breach their rules if you access them from behind a vpn, so you might need to check first. See the wiki elsewhere in this thread.

That wiki link is wrong. In the UK, for example, many ISPs explicitly block specific indexers, which means that unless you put Jackett and Sonarr/Radarr behind the VPN, you’ll get zero search hits.

i tried split tunneling and that doesnt work either

See my comment above.

They are trying to give you cake and making sure you can eat it too…sure your setup can work, it probably does work…BUT sooner or later thetvdb/themoviedb/cf are going to block that vpn ip.
I personally don’t care that when that happens your setup breaks…but the *arr support staff would like to avoid this, you are pushing all sheep into the river to drown.

I’m not that au fait with docker, so the way I do it is to run a windows VM with sonarr, radar, lidarr and download software all running through Nord VPN. The VM is then connected to the my plex server (the host) via an internal network with mapped drives to the media directories.

I appreciate there is a higher overhead running a VM rather than docker containers, but on the plus side it gives me something to easily login to via RDP when I’m away from home.

Before anyone says it, I do not have 3389 exposed to the internet… I have a Pi running my VPN

There’s really only Sky that blocks indexers.

Putting everything behind a VPN, double so with private trackers, is all but guaranteed to cause problems.

If you only use public sites then just toss Jackett behind the VPN so you’re not breaking the ARRs then.

Let me repeat:

ARRs behind VPN never

Jackett behind VPN if needed

you don’t want the *Arrs behind a VPN

And if you have Jackett behind a VPN you likely shouldn’t be using ANY private indexers

The wiki link is not entirely wrong.

Edit: only Jackett and not the ARRs should be beyond the VPN if you go this route
