I have some experiece with VPN’s. I know they hide your IP. However, I need to know why some VPN’s suggest me to pay options with BitTorrent support. I have never tried torrent but I plan to do it, so I need to know if it’s necessary to pay for that.
Say I download Kendrick’s last album, would it be risky for me to do it without a VPN?
I’d say VPN is essential if you don’t want the IP address leased to you associated with torrenting, specially in jurisdictions where downloaders are subject to scare tactics and other means of intimidation.
I would use one to be safe. I wouldn’t pay for any extra bittorrent support to be honest. I have a normal VPN account and just as long as the torrent has enough seeders, I max out my connection pretty quickly.
Genuinely curious about this: I’ve heard using Tor and VPN simultaneously will compromise privacy and put you at risk. I’ve also heard that it is good to use Tor when you are browsing/ using services that are NOT tied to your identity and use VPN when you are using services that ARE tied to your identity. Any truth to this? Thanks!
People who use bittorrent tend to use a lot more GBs per month than those who don’t. Many will be trying to max out their connection 24/7. So they need more and faster servers and more bandwidth.
Then you have the whole legal aspect of it. With rights companies and organisations trying to take the VPN to court, in order to get hold of the person torrenting details. The VPN should then turn around and say we don’t keep any logs, can’t help you. Then the rights companies take them to court demanding that they start keeping logs and stop allowing torrenting. So lots of possible legal bills and risks for the VPN.
It was just an example. I use a VPN now but I remeber before that time trying it and the results weren’t that far off. I still hope it is not that easy to collect that data that can be used in a legal conflict
There aren’t that many entry and exit nodes, using tor for BitTorrent is really inefficient. Plus it is what in bird culture is known as a dick move.
Just get a seedbox in a foreign country and you should be fine. A cheap one is less than 10 bucks. Yeah there’s the added step of downloading the files after they have been downloaded but your upload speed won’t be clogged up.
