I would like to setup a VPN Server at my parents house and connect to it. The reason for this is I would like to be able to use the xfinity stream app so I can watch one channel that I can’t get unless its on there home wifi. What is the cheapest way to do this? I will be used to watch hockey.
A raspberry pi and pivpn
i connect a vpn between my house and my parents house via pfsense on both sides. that being said, what the other guys said would probably work great with the pi.
I just helped someone else do this a couple weeks ago with a Pi and a $5/month VPS. DM me, happy to run through it again with you.
This!
i just did this exact same thing… raspberry pi + pivpn using wireguard. You can then just connect individual computers on your network directly to the pi in your parents house, or use another raspberry pi (or extra computer / virtual machine) to create a virtual router in your house so that any device on your network can easily connect.
What pfaense hardware do your use?
What Pi are you using 3 or 4 and what speeds do you get with it. I will be connecting to my parents house from my house and wasn’t sure if a Pi would be fast enough
hey u/bob84900 check DM
Did you have to setup the raspberry pi at the parents house. I want to setup the pi and ship it to my parents. Does that work? I should say I plan to use a wired connection.
i have like an i5 with 16gb of ram because we stream everything, have cameras recording constantly and have 2 teenagers and i like to over build.
For my folks, i bought them an HP t620+ like this

I set it up at home and shipped it up to them. Wired connection as well. He just plugs it into an open port and gives it power (sits on the back of the office desk where his equipment is.
Now my dad is tech savy enough for me to walk him through (over the phone) telling me what network address range his DHCP hands out (so i can set an ip on the pi) and setting up a port forward on his router to that pi. Otherwise i would likely have set it up on my next visit there.
thanks, I could also use two NETGATE 1100 PFSENSE+ SECURITY GATEWAY right?
