Set up vpn for parents

What are the steps or equipment I would need to do to get my parents or in-laws on my ‘internet’ to access programs like Netflix or YouTube TV with all the location changes taking place.

I have a UDM-SE in place at my house already

EDIT: Neither location has a pernament computer/laptop available to use

Hello! Thanks for posting on r/Ubiquiti!

Nothing. Your UDM already has Wireguard VPN server installed and running out of the box.

Just install the Wireguard windows client on your parents’ laptop. Go to wireguard dot com

Better yet, just make it a site-to-site with a small unifi gateway. That way, all their smart TV’s just work and their network becomes your managed network.

Tailscale will have this done in minutes

You can utilize the UDM-SE’s built-in VPN feature to create a secure connection for them to access Netflix and YouTube TV.

Assuming your parents have Internet already then I did the following to get Netflix at my house using my parents “Home” network.

  1. Setup a dream machine or similar router at my parents. Making sure to setup their modem to pass through.
  2. Configured a VPN server session on my parents dream machine.
  3. Connected to their VPN server using a VPN client session on my dream machine.
  4. Configured policy based routing to forwarded all Netflix traffic to my parents VPN.
  5. Profit

First off. Are your parents technically savvy enough to actually utilize a vpn? If they aren’t you will be perpetually helping them and it may not be worth it. Why don’t you just setup an account for them on Netflix and Disney?

Does the wire guard one work out of the box or teleport?
Teleport, you just download the WiFiman app and Is a repackaged wire guard.

would a unifi express not work since it doubles as an access point?

Also neither location has a laptop/computer that I would be able to set up except when I’m visiting.

Yes they are tech savvy and I’m not wanting to set up an account for them as that is a extra cost based on their location changes taking place.

My mother in law is only like 5 minutes away and she picks my kids up once a week from school so I would like them to have access freely there

They both work out of the box. Wireguard is much more configurable than Teleport so I would prefer that.

For Windows PC clients, I actually think Wireguard is easier and more straightfoward to use. Very simple for the end user. The WiFiman app, it’s like a wifi manager utitlity with a VPN client functionality thrown in as a bonus.

So if you’re gonna be supporting mostly Windows clients, I would go with Wireguard. If you will be supporting iPhones and iPads more, go with Teleport.

I’ve used wireguard on my UDMP for a couple of years now. It’s an excellent solution that just works. I have it on my iPhone and linux laptop.

Yeah an express should work. The only issue is if their ISP has a Cable Modem. I’m not sure what it’s like if you have to stick the gateway behind another NAT layer. They seem to cover that here: UI Help

Aside from that, as long as you set it up ahead of time, it should just be plug it in and you’re done.

Ok. They will still need your account logins to access Netflix and Disney regardless of using a vpn or not. What’s the reason for the vpn?

For the location to be as if it were my home. The ‘traveling’ option won’t always work I bet

No that’s not true. It will. Unless something has changed for Netflix it just needs to login to “home” every 30 days. But that may have changed because there was a massive backlash about that from the snowbird community.

My folks use my Disney account and they are hundred of miles away. And I use their paramount+ account. No issues.
