They are TOTAL scammers, sadly.
Had a sudden need for a VPN due to a server change screwing up my access to a favorite site, so I signed up for a free trial of one day; liked the service so I came back a few weeks later and signed up for one month. Meanwhile, the original problem that had caused me to seek out a VPN got solved, so I just let it lapse. Thought I’d better check my credit card anyway and discovered that CyberGhost had charged me for another month *without my authorization*. No problem…I first contact my bank to stop payment, then just go back to the CyberGhost site to cancel it. When I got there I found a helpful “we have automatically renewed your one-month plan” (gee thanks) but no way to cancel. A quick Google search revealed that they actually HIDE the cancellation function in a sub-menu only accessible by clicking on their little ghost logo. Okay,…I did that. Problem solved, right?
A few hours later I check my credit card and find that CyberGhost, rather than refunding my money, has now ADDED another charge of 81 dollars (the rate for 2 years). I go back to their site to cancel THAT charge, only to find the clicking on the little ghost logo *no longer* accesses a sub-menu. I go around and around on their site and finally fins a ‘chat’ function.
The guy I chat to apologizes, sort of, then asks a bunch of questions about why I want to cancel. I tell him why, and that I find his company and their website to be deceptive. He says “sorry you feel that way”. Finally he comes back and says that he has stopped the automatic renewal so I won’t be charged again on 2027.
2027, I say?? Oh HELL NO! I never signed up for two years. I want an end to this service and a refund of my money NOW, not two years from now. Reluctantly, he agrees and promises to reverse the charges. I end the chat and leave the site.
Finally, I decide to check my bank again an hour later. …and what do I find? I find ANOTHER 81 dollar charge to my credit card! So a 16 dollar charge, followed by two 81 dollar charges, all of which I must now stop payment on (the bank already agreed to stop the first one…now I have to go back and explain the other two).
Total fraudsters as far as I am concerned (being based in Romania probably should have been a clue for me,)
Never again.
